Town of Davie officials warn residents after recent coyote sightings in local neighborhoods and parks

Davie, Florida – Residents of the Town of Davie are being advised to remain alert following recent reports of coyote activity in the area. Town Park Rangers confirmed that coyotes have been spotted in and around local neighborhoods, parks, and green spaces, prompting a reminder about safety and coexistence.

Coyotes are typically shy and elusive animals, often seen alone or in small groups. While their presence may be surprising to some, these animals play a crucial role in Florida’s ecosystem by helping to control rodent and insect populations. Experts say that understanding their behavior and taking precautions can help reduce the chances of negative encounters with humans or pets.

“Never feed coyotes, as they will lose their fear of humans,” officials advised. Feeding wildlife may seem harmless, but it can encourage animals to approach homes, creating risks for residents, pets, and the animals themselves. In addition, securing garbage cans, cleaning up pet food, and removing fallen fruit can help minimize attractants that draw coyotes into residential areas.

Pet owners are urged to exercise caution. Keeping pets in enclosed areas and walking dogs on a short leash are simple steps that can prevent potentially dangerous interactions. Livestock owners should also ensure that animals are protected in predator-resistant enclosures to reduce the risk of coyote encounters.

Should a coyote approach too closely, Town officials recommend acting aggressively to discourage the animal. “Immediately act aggressively by waving your arms, making loud sounds and throwing stones,” they said. These actions can help reinforce natural caution in coyotes and reduce the likelihood of future close encounters.

For residents seeking additional guidance, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) provides a detailed Guide to Living with Coyotes, which is available online for download. The guide offers practical advice for preventing conflicts and safely coexisting with coyotes in residential and rural settings.

Anyone experiencing issues with coyotes or witnessing aggressive behavior is encouraged to contact FWC’s Wildlife Alert line at 888-404-3922. Officials stress that reporting incidents is important for monitoring wildlife activity and ensuring community safety.

While the presence of coyotes may initially cause concern, town authorities emphasize that these animals are generally not a threat if proper precautions are followed. Awareness, responsible behavior, and education are key to ensuring that humans and wildlife can coexist safely within Davie’s neighborhoods and natural areas.

The Town of Davie continues to monitor local wildlife activity and will provide updates as needed, encouraging residents to remain informed and proactive in preventing conflicts.
