Demolition begins at Festival Marketplace in Pompano Beach as longtime shopping destination prepares for redevelopment
Pompano Beach, Florida – After decades as a vibrant hub for local shoppers and small business owners, the Festival Marketplace in Pompano Beach has officially begun demolition. Construction crews were seen tearing down portions of the sprawling property Friday morning at 11:40 a.m. The marketplace, located at 2900 W. Sample Road, has been a staple for residents and visitors for nearly 40 years, housing dozens of family-owned businesses under one roof.
The demolition comes roughly six months after the last tenants vacated the site. On June 1, 2025, business owners officially closed their doors, leaving behind empty vendor booths and a largely deserted parking lot. Hilda Vargas de Matthews, who ran La La Chic, had previously told that she planned to relocate her boutique to the Shoppes at Deerfield. “This is really such a beautiful place of business,” she said at the time, reflecting the pride many owners felt in their longtime marketplace locations.
For decades, Festival Marketplace was known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, jewelers, specialty shops, and eateries. The property drew local shoppers as well as visitors from across South Florida, who came to browse unique goods and enjoy the atmosphere of a community-focused marketplace. Over the years, the marketplace became more than a shopping destination—it was a gathering place where families and friends would spend hours exploring the various vendors.
According to Foundry Commercial, the company overseeing the property’s redevelopment, the site will soon be transformed into three warehouse buildings intended for small- to medium-sized tenants. The development will offer direct exposure along Sample Road and convenient access to Florida’s Turnpike, positioning it as a modern commercial hub for the area. A company representative said the project is expected to create new jobs and contribute to the local economy, though the development still needs to complete Pompano Beach’s site plan review process.
While the demolition marks the end of an era for Festival Marketplace, it also signals the start of a new chapter for the property. Local officials and developers have emphasized that the redevelopment is designed to bring economic growth to the area, offering opportunities for new businesses and employment. Yet, for longtime residents and business owners, seeing the once-bustling marketplace reduced to rubble carries a sense of nostalgia and loss.
The transformation of the site reflects broader trends in South Florida, where older shopping centers and marketplaces are being redeveloped to meet the needs of modern commerce.
