Everglades High School senior recognized by Broward County Public Schools as 2026 JROTC Cadet of the Year for outstanding leadership and academics
Broward County, Florida – A senior from Everglades High School has earned one of the highest honors available within Broward County Public Schools JROTC programs after being named the district’s 2026 JROTC Cadet of the Year.
Steve Joseph received the recognition during a special ceremony held on April 23, where district leaders celebrated his academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to service. The award places him at the top of a highly competitive field that included 30 student nominees representing JROTC programs from schools across Broward County.
For Joseph, the honor marks the culmination of years of dedication both inside and outside the classroom.
Along with the title, he received a ceremonial eagle trophy and a $2,000 scholarship. District officials also announced that Joseph had been promoted to Cadet Colonel — the highest rank attainable within BCPS JROTC programs.
The achievement reflects not only leadership within the cadet corps, but also academic excellence. Joseph currently holds an impressive weighted GPA of 4.87 and plans to continue his education at the University of South Florida.
School officials say Joseph stood out among this year’s nominees because of his discipline, leadership presence, and commitment to helping others succeed.
“Cadet Joseph represents the very best of Broward County Public Schools JROTC,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “His dedication to leadership, academic excellence and service to others reflects the core values we strive to instill in every student, and we are proud to recognize his outstanding achievements.”
The district’s annual Cadet of the Year event is designed to highlight students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and strong involvement in their schools and communities. Organizers say the recognition extends beyond military-style training, emphasizing responsibility, teamwork, citizenship, and personal growth.
For many students, JROTC programs become a place where confidence and structure develop over time. Joseph said the experience played a major role in shaping both his character and future goals.
“JROTC has given me a support system and a shoulder I can always lean on,” Joseph said. “What I’ve gained from this program is greater than what any other classroom has offered me.”
His comments resonated with educators and fellow cadets attending the ceremony, many of whom described JROTC as a program that creates mentorship opportunities and lifelong lessons that extend far beyond uniforms and drills.
Across Broward County, JROTC programs continue to involve students in leadership training, academic support, volunteer service, and civic engagement activities. District officials say the annual award serves as a reminder of the positive impact these programs can have on young people preparing for college, careers, and future leadership roles.
Joseph’s selection as Cadet of the Year now places him among a distinguished group of past recipients who have represented the highest standards of BCPS JROTC programs.
As graduation approaches, the Everglades High School senior is preparing for the next chapter of his academic journey, carrying with him both the recognition of his achievements and the lessons learned through years of dedication and service.
