Marion County, Florida – A Marion County woman is celebrating a life-changing moment after striking it big with a Florida Lottery Scratch-Off ticket, turning a small purchase into a seven-figure prize. The win, confirmed by the Florida Lottery, highlights once again how chance encounters at everyday stores can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

Angelique Hernandez, 44, of Ocala, claimed a $1 million prize from the GOLD RUSH LEGACY Scratch-Off game at Florida Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee on February 5. Instead of choosing annual payments, Hernandez opted for a one-time lump-sum payout, receiving $640,000.00 after taxes.

Her winning journey began with a simple stop at a local supermarket. Hernandez purchased her lucky $20 ticket from Publix, located at 10301 SE U.S. Highway 441 in Belleview. That single ticket ultimately transformed into a $1 million prize, making her one of the latest Florida Scratch-Off millionaires.

The GOLD RUSH LEGACY game, which launched in April 2024, has quickly become one of the most popular high-value Scratch-Off offerings in the state. The game features a range of large prizes, including four top prizes of $10 million and 20 prizes worth $1 million each. It also offers more than $894 million in total cash prizes across all levels, giving players frequent chances to win at different tiers.

According to the Florida Lottery, the overall odds of winning any prize in the game are approximately 1 in 2.97, meaning nearly one out of every three tickets wins something. While top prizes are rare, the game continues to attract strong interest due to its mix of large jackpots and frequent smaller wins.

Scratch-Off games remain a central part of Florida’s lottery system, accounting for about 74 percent of total ticket sales during the 2024–2025 fiscal year. Their popularity continues to grow, fueled by both accessibility and the immediate nature of the games compared to draw-based lotteries.

Since their introduction, Scratch-Off games have had a significant financial impact across the state. The Florida Lottery reports that these games have awarded more than $72.2 billion in total prizes. They have also created 2,510 millionaires, adding to the growing list of players who have experienced sudden financial windfalls from relatively small purchases.

Beyond individual winnings, Scratch-Off ticket sales contribute heavily to public funding. According to the Florida Lottery, more than $21.28 billion has been generated for the state’s Educational Enhancement Trust Fund since the inception of Scratch-Off games. These funds support educational programs and initiatives across Florida, linking lottery participation to broader public benefits.

For Hernandez, however, the focus is likely on the personal impact of her unexpected win. A routine purchase at a local store has now turned into a major financial milestone, one that will likely influence her future in significant ways.

While the odds remain long for any individual ticket, stories like this continue to capture public attention. Each win reinforces the unpredictable nature of Scratch-Off games, where a simple decision at the checkout counter can sometimes lead to a moment that changes everything.
