Commissioner Tim Lonergan elected to Broward MPO Executive Committee securing Oakland Park representation in regional transportation planning leadership

Oakland Park, Florida – Oakland Park will have a direct voice at the highest level of regional transportation planning after Commissioner Tim Lonergan was elected to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Executive Committee for the upcoming term. The appointment was confirmed during the MPO Board meeting held on June 11, 2026.

Lonergan will serve as an at-large member on the Executive Committee for the period running from July 2026 through June 2027. The role places him in key discussions that help shape transportation priorities across Broward County, including long-term planning, funding decisions, and mobility strategies that affect thousands of daily commuters.

For Oakland Park, the appointment is more than just a title. It means the city now has stronger representation in regional decision-making spaces where major infrastructure and transportation policies are debated and set. These decisions often determine how neighborhoods are connected, how safe roads are for pedestrians and cyclists, and how efficiently people move between work, school, and essential services.

Commissioner Lonergan brings experience and preparation to the role. He is a graduate of the Broward MPO 2025 Transportation Academy, a program designed to educate local leaders on transportation systems, planning frameworks, and regional challenges. In addition, he has served on the National League of Cities Transportation and Infrastructure Services Federal Advocacy Committee since January 2025, giving him exposure to broader policy discussions beyond Broward County.

The Broward MPO itself plays a central role in guiding transportation planning across the region. Oakland Park has already been active in working with the MPO and partner agencies on transportation upgrades. One of the most notable efforts includes the Safe Routes to School project near Lloyd Estates Elementary School. That initiative focuses on improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety by adding and replacing sidewalks, installing ADA-compliant ramps, upgrading crosswalks, and improving curb infrastructure. The project has been supported through collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Broward MPO.

These types of projects highlight why regional representation matters. Transportation decisions are not limited to highways or major roads; they also shape how safely children walk to school, how easily residents reach transit stops, and how well different parts of a city connect with one another.
