Emergency sewer main repair underway at Miami Road and SE 15th Street in Harbordale with road restrictions expected through Friday
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – An emergency sewer repair is underway at the intersection of Miami Road and SE 15th Street in Fort Lauderdale’s Harbordale neighborhood, with crews working around the clock to repair a damaged sewer main and restore the roadway.
The City of Fort Lauderdale and Southern Underground Industries are handling the project, which began Wednesday, August 19, and is currently scheduled to continue through Friday, August 21. Officials noted that the schedule could change depending on weather conditions or other unexpected problems at the work site.
The main work involves repairing a damaged gravity sewer main. Once the underground repair is completed, crews will also restore asphalt affected by the construction.
The emergency work is having a direct impact on traffic in the area. Miami Road is open only to local traffic between SE 15th Street and SE 14th Court. Drivers who do not need to access the area are being asked to follow the posted detour.
The designated detour uses SE 14th Court, US 1 / Federal Highway and SE 15th Street. Motorists should allow additional time when traveling through the area and pay attention to signs directing traffic around the construction zone.

Access to driveways will generally remain available during the repair. However, officials said there may be brief situations in which construction takes place directly across from a driveway. In those cases, crews will coordinate with affected residents or property owners locally before the work begins.
Because the repair is being carried out on an emergency basis, crews may be working at any hour. The current schedule calls for construction activities around the clock until the repair is finished.
Residents and businesses nearby should expect some of the normal sounds associated with major underground construction. Officials said intermittent heavy machinery noise and backup alarms may be heard throughout the project. Temporary lighting will also be used at night so crews can continue working safely.
The city said steps are being taken to limit the disruption to nearby residents as much as possible while allowing the repair work to move forward.
At this time, officials do not anticipate an interruption to sewer service during the project. The emergency repair is focused on the damaged gravity sewer main, while crews work to address the problem and return the area to normal conditions.
Drivers traveling near the construction area are being asked to use extra caution. Officials recommend slowing down, following all posted traffic signs and watching for workers and construction equipment.
The temporary closure and detour are expected to remain in place until the work is completed and all lanes of Miami Road can safely reopen. The city said updates will be provided as the repair progresses and when normal traffic conditions return.
Officials apologized to residents and motorists for the inconvenience caused by the emergency work and thanked neighbors for their patience while crews address the sewer problem.
Residents who have questions or concerns about the project can contact the City of Fort Lauderdale at 954-828-8000. Further updates will be shared as work continues at Miami Road and SE 15th Street.
