Fort Lauderdale United suffers heartbreaking late defeat in season opener against Sporting JAX

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale United FC opened its 2026 Fall Gainbridge Super League campaign with a frustrating defeat Saturday night, falling to Sporting JAX in a match that remained scoreless for most of the evening before a late deflection decided the result.

Playing at the newly named Amerant Bank Field on August 15, Fort Lauderdale entered the season with a new-look squad and showed plenty of energy on both sides of the ball. The club created several promising opportunities but could not turn its pressure into a goal. Sporting JAX ultimately found the breakthrough at the worst possible moment for the home side, scoring as regulation time expired.

The loss leaves Fort Lauderdale United at 0-1-0 with no points, while Sporting JAX begins the campaign 1-0-0 with three points.

Despite the result, Fort Lauderdale showed early signs of what it may be capable of during the 2026 season. The home team started aggressively, with Emily Thompson and Kiara Locklear combining to create an early attacking threat.

Grace Cutler also played an important role in Fort Lauderdale’s first-half attack. Working alongside Thompson and Locklear, Cutler repeatedly helped create pressure and opportunities while also contributing defensively.

The home side came closest to taking control of the match late in the opening half. In the 35th minute, new addition Kelsey Oyler found Locklear on the wing. Locklear then delivered a carefully weighted pass to Cutler, whose attempt forced a save.

Fort Lauderdale had another excellent chance just before halftime. Locklear got past her defender on the left side and sent a well-placed ball toward Sh’nia Gordon. Gordon attempted to finish with one touch, but the effort missed the target. The opportunity slipped away, and the teams entered halftime still tied 0-0.

The second half began with another dangerous Fort Lauderdale sequence. Thompson delivered a free kick into the box, where Simpson rose to meet it and struck a volley. The attempt deflected off the back post, denying the home team another chance to break the deadlock.

Head Coach Tyrone Mears, returning to the sidelines, then made his first substitution of the match. All-League Second Team midfielder Kelli Van Treeck entered for Thompson as Fort Lauderdale looked for another way to unlock the Sporting JAX defense.

Gordon continued to cause problems after the break. Over a span of roughly seven minutes, she made three dangerous runs down the right wing and also managed to put a shot on frame. Fort Lauderdale continued to push, but Sporting JAX remained in the match.

With the game still tied late in regulation, Mears made a triple substitution in the 78th minute. Taylor Smith, Abi Hugh and Farrah Walters came on for Cutler, Locklear and Gordon, giving Fort Lauderdale fresh legs for the closing stages.

The match appeared headed toward a scoreless draw, but the final moments produced a painful ending for the home team.

After earning a free kick just outside the box, Sporting JAX took advantage of the opportunity. The visiting team sent a shot toward goal, and the attempt was deflected before finding the net as regulation time expired.

Fort Lauderdale immediately went forward in search of an equalizer. Five minutes of stoppage time gave the home side one final chance to rescue a point, but the breakthrough never came.

The defeat was particularly difficult because Fort Lauderdale had created enough opportunities to leave the field with a different result. The team had threatened through the wings, generated chances from open play and set pieces, and limited Sporting JAX for most of the contest.

Instead, a single late deflection separated the two teams.

For Fort Lauderdale, the loss also begins a season with a new-look squad that showed encouraging flashes despite the disappointing finish. The club will now have a week off before returning to action for its second straight home match.

Fort Lauderdale United will host Brooklyn FC on Friday, August 28, as it looks to collect its first points of the season. The match will also give the team an opportunity to close its opening homestand on a more positive note.

Three points will be the clear objective against the New York-based opponent. After spending much of the season opener creating chances without finding the net, Fort Lauderdale will look to turn that attacking pressure into goals when Brooklyn FC comes to town.

The August 28 match should also provide another opportunity for Mears and his coaching staff to evaluate the squad following the season opener. Several players made an impact against Sporting JAX, while the late substitutions showed the depth available as Fort Lauderdale searches for the right combinations.

For now, the opening result is a disappointment, but the performance offered reasons for optimism. Fort Lauderdale United competed intensely, generated dangerous chances and remained in position to earn a result until the final moments.

The next challenge will be converting those positive moments into points. The club’s season is only beginning, and the home match against Brooklyn FC will give Fort Lauderdale an immediate chance to respond to Saturday’s heartbreaking loss.
