BCPS provides new details about Secure the Next Generation Referendum renewal heading to Broward voters in November

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Broward County Public Schools is providing new information about the Secure the Next Generation Referendum Renewal, a measure that will go before voters in the November 3, 2026, election.

BCPS officials, including School Board members, Superintendent, district leadership and staff, are scheduled to discuss the referendum Tuesday, September 15, at 3 p.m. The announcement will take place at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center at 600 S.E. Third Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

The event will also be available to the public through a live stream.

The referendum is important to the district because the Secure the Next Generation measure, which voters approved in 2022, is set to expire. If voters renew it, the funding would continue to support several areas across Broward County Public Schools.

One of the largest portions of the money currently goes toward compensation supplements. The district says approximately $173 million is provided each year for supplements for teachers and other eligible staff.

The referendum also supports school safety. More than 390 school safety personnel are funded through the program, along with $1.7 million in state-of-the-art software that gives all staff access to wearable panic buttons designed to provide an immediate security response.

Mental health services are another major part of the funding. More than 224 mental health professionals are supported through the referendum, providing additional resources for students and school communities.

According to BCPS, the financial impact of the referendum extends beyond individual programs and positions. If voters do not renew the measure, the school district would lose approximately $358 million annually in funding for positions and compensation supplements.

That potential loss is expected to be a central part of the district’s message as voters consider the renewal in November.

The September 15 information session is intended to provide the public with updates and additional details about what the renewal could mean for Broward County Public Schools.

The Secure the Next Generation Referendum was originally approved by voters in 2022. With its current funding set to expire, the November ballot will give Broward County voters the opportunity to decide whether the measure should continue.

BCPS officials are expected to outline the current uses of the funding and explain the importance of the renewal as the district moves toward the November 3 election.
