Blanche Ely High School unveils new student-run food truck through innovative partnership with Intuit

Pompano Beach, Florida – Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach is preparing to give students a new kind of classroom experience with the arrival of a fully equipped food truck valued at more than $200,000. The truck, donated through Intuit’s Food Truck Program, will allow students to learn about running a business while putting their classroom skills to work in a real-world setting.

The school will officially unveil the food truck at noon on Wednesday, September 30, bringing together Broward County School Board members, the Broward County Public Schools superintendent, school staff and students, Intuit representatives and community leaders.

Blanche Ely High School is the first high school in Florida and the 12th school in the nation to receive a food truck through the Intuit program. The initiative is designed to give Career and Technical Education students an opportunity to experience what it takes to operate a business from the ground up.

For students, the truck will be more than a place to prepare and sell food. It will become a working environment where lessons in culinary arts, marketing, finance and entrepreneurship can come together.

Students will have the chance to develop menus and use their culinary skills while also learning how to promote their business. They will create marketing materials and take part in the financial side of the operation, including bookkeeping, accounting and taxes.

That combination is a central part of the program. Rather than learning about business only through textbooks or classroom exercises, students can see how different parts of a company fit together and how decisions made in one area can affect another.

The partnership also gives Blanche Ely students access to Intuit for Education, a financial literacy curriculum that includes tools such as QuickBooks, TurboTax, Mailchimp and Credit Karma. The resources are intended to help students develop a better understanding of financial and business responsibilities.

The food truck itself is a commercial-grade operation, providing students with equipment and a setting that can be used for practical training. The program is offered at no cost to participating schools.

Intuit’s Food Truck Program focuses on helping students develop technical, financial and entrepreneurial skills. The experience is intended to prepare students for different paths after high school, whether they continue their education, enter the workforce or eventually start businesses of their own.

For Blanche Ely, the program also creates an opportunity to connect several areas of career education. A student interested in cooking, for example, can work on food preparation while also learning about pricing, accounting, customer service and promotion.

The program can also show students that running a food business involves considerably more than preparing meals. Managing expenses, keeping financial records, understanding taxes and attracting customers are all important parts of operating a business.

The partnership comes as schools continue to look for ways to provide students with practical experiences that connect classroom lessons to possible careers. At Blanche Ely, the food truck will give students a chance to make those connections through an actual business environment.

School and community representatives are expected to attend the unveiling, along with students, teachers and staff from Blanche Ely and members of Broward County Public Schools’ Career, Technical, Adult and Community Education team.

The new food truck will be located at Blanche Ely High School, 1201 N.W. Sixth Ave. in Pompano Beach. Its arrival marks a new opportunity for students to learn by doing and to gain experience with the many responsibilities involved in running a business.

Through the partnership with Intuit, Blanche Ely students will have access to equipment, financial education and business technology tools while developing their own skills. The goal is to give them practical knowledge and greater confidence as they prepare for college, careers and potential business ownership.
