Broward County, Florida – New River Middle School has earned a national distinction recognizing the quality of its magnet education programs. Magnet Schools of America named the school a 2026 Nationally Certified-Demonstration School, with certification remaining valid through August 2030.

The designation recognizes the school’s Marine Science and Integrated Career and Academic Networks, known as iCAN, Magnet Programs. Broward County Public Schools announced the honor, which highlights achievement in academics, innovation, diversity, and educational choice.

To earn the certification, New River Middle School underwent an evidence-based evaluation against Magnet Schools of America’s Standards of Excellence and five pillars. The review examined the school’s work against the organization’s framework for high-quality magnet education.

The distinction places New River among magnet programs across the country recognized for exemplary educational standards and practices. For the school community, it also acknowledges the work behind the learning opportunities offered to students and the commitment shared by educators, families, and community partners.

“We congratulate the students, teachers, administrators, families and community partners at New River Middle School for this outstanding achievement,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “The Marine Science and iCAN Magnet Programs provide students with innovative and engaging learning experiences that inspire them to explore their interests and prepare for future success. We are proud to see New River Middle School earn this prestigious designation and serve as a model of excellence in magnet education.”

The two programs give students opportunities to explore their interests through learning experiences that the district describes as both innovative and engaging. BCPS credited the recognition to the collective efforts of the school community in supporting students as they learn, explore, and work toward their goals.

The certification recognizes more than an individual accomplishment. It reflects the school’s broader commitment to its students, families, and community stakeholders, along with its role as an example of strong magnet education.
