Town of Davie to begin first phase of school zone speed safety program with speed cameras going live on March 17

Davie, Florida – The Town of Davie is taking a significant step toward improving the safety of students, residents, and school staff with the launch of its School Zone Speed Safety Program. Starting March 17, 2025, the first phase of this program will activate two speed cameras in critical school zones, aiming to curb speeding and enhance safety around schools. The speed cameras will operate at two key locations: the eastbound lane on SW 30th Street at Nova Southeastern University and University School, and the northbound lane on SW 133rd Avenue at Flamingo Elementary and Western High School.
The initiative comes in response to growing concerns over speeding in school zones and aims to protect the lives of children and other community members. Speeding near schools presents a significant risk, especially during times when students are arriving or leaving for class. With this new program, the Town of Davie hopes to send a strong message to drivers and help keep school zones safer for everyone.
A Gradual Rollout for Maximum Effectiveness
The program will roll out in phases to ensure that it operates smoothly and effectively. From March 17 through April 16, 2025, the speed cameras will be in a warning-only phase. During this time, drivers who exceed the speed limit near the school zones will receive a warning notice in the mail. The notice will alert the driver to the violation and emphasize the importance of staying alert in these high-traffic school zones.
After the warning period, which ends on April 16, 2025, the cameras will begin issuing citations to any drivers caught speeding. Fines of $100 will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, with payment due within 30 days. This change is intended to encourage drivers to follow the speed limits and exercise caution around schools, helping to prevent accidents and protect the children and staff in these areas.
“We’re making this a gradual, phased approach because we want drivers to understand the importance of this program and adjust their habits accordingly,” said a spokesperson from the Town of Davie. “It’s about improving safety, not just issuing fines.”
Focusing on School Zones
The new speed cameras have been strategically placed in school zones that are known for high traffic volumes and frequent pedestrian activity. As mentioned, the cameras will initially go live at two locations: one at SW 30th Street near Nova Southeastern University and University School, and another on SW 133rd Avenue near Flamingo Elementary and Western High School. These locations were selected due to the high number of drivers passing through them during the critical school hours.
By law, the Town of Davie must provide a 30-day warning period before officially issuing citations. During this time, residents and drivers will be informed about the program’s goals and how it operates. After the grace period, violators will face the consequences of their actions, which include receiving a $100 fine.
Future Expansion and Community Involvement
This initial phase is just the beginning. The Town of Davie has plans to expand the program over the course of the year, adding more cameras throughout the community as part of a comprehensive effort to make the roads safer for children. Several other locations are in the process of being equipped with cameras, including spots near Eisenhower Elementary, Nova Middle School, Davie Elementary, and more. However, the installation of cameras at some of these locations requires permits from Broward County and the Florida Department of Transportation, which are still under review.
The Town is working closely with Verra Mobility, a leader in speed safety technology, to administer the program. The company will manage the installation and operation of the cameras, which will capture images of vehicle license plates. Each potential violation will be transmitted through secure video footage, which will then be reviewed and verified by law enforcement before any citations are issued.
Safety, Education, and Community Engagement
While the cameras are certainly an important part of the Town’s strategy, community engagement will also play a significant role in the success of the program. In addition to the camera enforcement, the Town of Davie is committed to raising awareness about the importance of traffic safety, especially in school zones. Information and resources will be made available to residents and drivers to help them understand the new program and its goals.
For those who want more information about the speed safety program or have questions regarding violations, the Town has set up a dedicated webpage: www.davie-fl.gov/SpeedSafety. The webpage offers comprehensive details about the program, including frequently asked questions, contact information, and guidelines for residents who want to learn more about how the system works.
A Step Toward Safer Streets
With the official launch of the School Zone Speed Safety Program in Davie, the Town is taking proactive steps toward making its streets safer for everyone, particularly children. The introduction of speed cameras is expected to serve as a deterrent for drivers who might otherwise ignore the speed limits near schools. By implementing a phased approach and collaborating with community stakeholders, the Town of Davie is setting an example for other municipalities to follow when it comes to traffic safety.
Residents are encouraged to pay attention to the posted speed limits and be mindful of the new cameras that will soon be active. The Town is hopeful that this initiative will lead to safer, more cautious driving in school zones, ultimately preventing accidents and protecting the most vulnerable members of the community—our children.
For more information or to stay up-to-date on the program, residents can visit the Town’s official website or check out the traffic safety program’s dedicated page. With continued efforts and a strong commitment to community safety, the Town of Davie is making sure its roads are safe for all.
