Closure of westbound exit ramp at hiatus road on state road 862/i-595 scheduled for April 23 and 24, 2025

Broward County, Florida – Drivers in Broward County should plan for temporary detours later this month, as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced the closure of the SR 862/I-595 westbound exit ramp to Hiatus Road (Exit 3). This closure will take place on Wednesday night, April 23, and Thursday night, April 24, 2025, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, as part of ongoing safety improvements to the state’s transportation system.

The closure is necessary to accommodate directional bore operations and the installation of new “Wrong-Way” signage. FDOT officials are urging drivers to take note of the temporary changes to traffic patterns and plan accordingly.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured through a specific route to ensure safe travel around the construction zone. Motorists traveling westbound on SR 862/I-595 will be directed to Exit 2, which leads to SR 823/Flamingo Road. From there, drivers will make a U-turn at Flamingo Road and head eastbound on SR 84 to reconnect with Hiatus Road. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers will be stationed on-site to monitor traffic flow and assist with any issues that may arise. Additionally, ample signage will be placed along the detour route to guide motorists safely through the area.

This construction is part of a broader initiative by FDOT aimed at improving safety on Florida’s highways. The project is a key element of FDOT’s Wrong-Way Driving Initiative, designed to reduce the occurrence of wrong-way driving incidents that can lead to severe crashes. As part of this effort, the department is installing flashing beacons, new wrong-way signage, and advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices at 23 exit ramps along major roadways including SR 9/I-95, SR 93/I-75, and SR 862/I-595.

The goal of these improvements is to detect and prevent wrong-way drivers from entering the highway system, which has been identified as a significant safety concern. The new technology will be integrated with the Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC), enabling real-time monitoring and faster alerts to both motorists and law enforcement about potential wrong-way driving situations. The upgrades will also include enhanced signage and pavement markings, which are designed to improve visibility and extend the lifespan of road infrastructure.

This safety initiative comes as part of an ongoing effort to ensure Florida’s roadways remain safe, resilient, and efficient for years to come. FDOT has been proactive in seeking community feedback, working with local residents to strike a balance between the public’s transportation needs and the vision for their communities. This collaborative approach helps ensure that FDOT’s projects align with the priorities and concerns of those who use the roads every day.

The construction project, which started in August 2024, is expected to be completed by Summer 2025. With an estimated cost of $5,626,065, this safety enhancement project is one of several initiatives in Broward County designed to improve traffic management and prevent accidents on the road.
