Oakland Park, Florida – The City of Oakland Park has been recognized once again for its exceptional financial management, earning the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the 21st consecutive year. This prestigious recognition, awarded for the City’s fiscal year 2025 budget, underscores Oakland Park’s unwavering commitment to transparency, sound financial practices, and continuous improvement in budgeting.

The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is a symbol of excellence in government budgeting. It is given to municipalities that meet rigorous national standards, ensuring their budgets serve multiple critical purposes. A budget must function as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communication tool. By meeting these high standards, Oakland Park has demonstrated that it is committed not only to managing public funds wisely but also to maintaining open lines of communication with its residents and stakeholders.

“This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every dollar is spent wisely and that our budgeting process supports our community’s long-term success and growth,” said a City representative. For over two decades, the City of Oakland Park has maintained this high standard, an accomplishment that reflects its dedication to responsible financial stewardship.

In addition to receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the City of Oakland Park earned two special recognitions this year. These awards were given for the City’s outstanding performance in key budgetary categories, including Long-range Operating Financial Plans and Capital Program. Special recognition is granted when all three reviewers provide the highest possible score in specific categories, highlighting the City’s superior financial planning.

The City’s achievement of this award for 21 consecutive years places it among an elite group of municipalities. The consistent recognition highlights the City Commission and staff’s commitment to excellence in budgeting and financial transparency. It also emphasizes the City’s ongoing efforts to ensure that every aspect of its financial planning is aligned with best practices in public finance.

This year’s recognition comes alongside an important step in Oakland Park’s financial strategy. The City adopted a reduced millage rate for the 2025 fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. This reduction in the millage rate demonstrates Oakland Park’s commitment to managing taxpayer dollars effectively while still providing essential services to the community.

The GFOA, established in 1906, is a professional organization dedicated to advancing public finance practices. With over 23,000 active members, the GFOA plays a pivotal role in promoting excellence in budgeting through its Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program. The program, which began in 1984, encourages municipalities to adopt comprehensive and transparent budgeting practices that can serve as models for other governments.

For Oakland Park, this award is not just a mark of excellence in financial management but a testament to the city’s ongoing efforts to provide clear, accessible financial information to its residents. By achieving this recognition year after year, the City continues to solidify its reputation as a leader in financial transparency and responsibility.

The GFOA’s award is a significant milestone in Oakland Park’s journey toward becoming a model of fiscal responsibility. It reaffirms that the City is dedicated to providing residents with the best possible services, while also ensuring that it remains financially sound and sustainable for years to come. As Oakland Park continues to evolve and grow, its commitment to excellence in budgeting will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of its success.

This recognition from the GFOA is more than just an award; it is a reminder of the hard work and dedication that goes into managing the City’s finances.
