Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The City of Fort Lauderdale is set to begin work on the NW 5th Street Asphalt Improvement Project, a major infrastructure upgrade designed to enhance the roadway conditions in the Historic Dorsey Riverbend neighborhood. The project, which is scheduled to kick off on Monday, May 12, 2025, will involve resurfacing the asphalt at various intersections between NW 10th Avenue and NW 18th Avenue, and it is expected to be completed by Friday, May 30, 2025.

FG Construction has been contracted to carry out the project, which aims to remove the existing paver crosswalks and replace them with new asphalt. The specific intersections that will be affected include NW 10th Avenue, NW 11th Avenue, NW 11th Terrace, NW 12th Avenue, NW 14th Avenue, NW 14th Terrace, NW 17th Avenue, and NW 18th Avenue.

The work will take place Monday through Friday, with construction hours running from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Starting at NW 10th Avenue, crews will move westward toward NW 18th Avenue. The project is set to improve the safety and durability of these busy intersections, which have been in need of a resurfacing for some time.

The City of Fort Lauderdale is funding the project through a Community Development Block Grant, which is a federal program managed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These funds are specifically allocated to help communities strengthen infrastructure and improve neighborhood resilience. The grant ensures that these essential road improvements will be made while supporting the ongoing development of the area.

Traffic and Accessibility Considerations

As with any major construction project, there will be some disruptions to traffic during the work. Each intersection will be closed during work hours for approximately two days. While this closure will temporarily block off access to each intersection, traffic will be detoured to nearby streets to keep vehicles moving. Drivers are urged to follow posted detour signs and exercise caution as they navigate through the area. Additionally, traffic control personnel will be on hand to guide vehicles through the construction zones and ensure that traffic flow remains as smooth as possible.

For residents and businesses in the area, access to driveways will generally be maintained throughout the project. However, there may be occasions when crews need to work directly across from driveways, temporarily restricting access. The project team is committed to minimizing disruptions and will work closely with local residents to notify them in advance of any work that could impact driveway access.

“Each phase of the project is being planned with the goal of keeping as many normal routines in place for residents as possible,” said a City of Fort Lauderdale representative. “We understand that this project may cause some inconvenience, but the end result will significantly improve the roadways and increase safety in the long run.”

Community Engagement and Communication

The city’s communication efforts have been a key part of the project planning process. With the work set to occur in a historically significant neighborhood, city officials have worked closely with the community to address any concerns and ensure transparency throughout the process. Residents have been notified of the upcoming construction schedule and will continue to receive updates as the project progresses.

“We want to ensure that everyone in the neighborhood is aware of the project and has the information they need to navigate the changes,” said the representative. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to improve this important part of Fort Lauderdale.”

The city also thanked residents in advance for their understanding and cooperation as construction crews begin the resurfacing process. While temporary disruptions are expected, the project will ultimately bring long-term benefits by enhancing the roads and ensuring safer, more reliable transportation for all who live, work, and travel through the Historic Dorsey Riverbend area.

As the project begins in mid-May, the City of Fort Lauderdale urges all residents and drivers in the vicinity of NW 5th Street to plan accordingly and stay informed about any changes that may affect their daily routines. With safety at the forefront of the project, the City remains committed to completing the work efficiently and minimizing disruptions as much as possible.
