Major traffic disruptions and lane closures on Las Olas Boulevard as crews repair water main between SE 16th Avenue and Nurmi Drive

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Drivers in Fort Lauderdale should expect significant traffic changes and delays along Las Olas Boulevard as city crews work to repair a damaged air release valve in a 16-inch water main located near South Gordon Road. The repair project, being carried out in collaboration with a contractor, has prompted lane closures and a shift in traffic patterns, especially between SE 16th Avenue and Nurmi Drive.

The following traffic disruptions are currently in effect:

• The north side of Las Olas Boulevard is closed from Nurmi Drive to South Gordon Road, impacting drivers traveling in that direction.
• Westbound traffic is now diverted to the south side of the boulevard, where one lane is open in each direction, allowing for continued traffic flow despite the closure.
• One eastbound lane of Las Olas Boulevard is closed from SE 16th Avenue to Coral Way, further adding to the traffic congestion.
• For those exiting the following isles on the north side of Las Olas Boulevard, drivers can only turn right (westbound): South Gordon Road, Hendricks Isle, Isle of Venice Drive, Fiesta Way, and Nurmi Drive.
• On the south side, traffic exiting Isle of Capri Drive, Bontona Avenue, Coconut Isle Drive, Lido Drive, and Coral Way can only turn right (eastbound).

The city’s Neighbor Service Center is urging drivers to stay alert and follow posted signs, as well as to drive cautiously through the area. Motorists are also encouraged to consider alternate routes, as the repairs are expected to take some time to complete.

“This is an essential repair to maintain the integrity of our water system, but we understand the impact it’s having on daily traffic. We’re asking drivers to please be patient and follow the traffic detours in place,” a city spokesperson noted.

City officials also stressed the importance of staying informed, as further updates will be shared as new information becomes available regarding the project’s progress. This repair work is necessary to address the damaged air release valve, which plays a vital role in the operation of the water main along this busy section of Las Olas Boulevard.
