Broward County, Florida – Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students have shown impressive academic growth, outperforming the state in several key areas according to the recently released Spring 2025 statewide assessment results. These assessments, conducted by the Florida Department of Education, include the Florida Assessment for Student Thinking (FAST) for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, along with Science scores for grades 5 and 8. The results also encompass the cumulative End-of-Course (EOC) exams for subjects like Biology, Civics, U.S. History, Algebra, and Geometry.

In a year marked by continued academic challenges, BCPS emerged as a clear standout. The district’s students outperformed the state in almost every tested category, including ELA for all grades, Mathematics for grades 3 through 7, Science for grade 5, and in all EOC exam subjects. Additionally, BCPS exceeded the performance of Florida’s four other largest school districts – Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, Orange, and Palm Beach counties – in most tested areas, further solidifying the district’s position as a leader in education.

“We’re incredibly proud of these results—they show that the strategies we’ve put in place over the past two years are truly making a difference for our students,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “This progress is thanks to the hard work of our amazing teachers, support staff, school leaders and administrators, along with our School Board and entire community. Together, we’re making sure our students receive the world-class education they deserve.”

The results from the Spring 2025 FAST assessments revealed significant improvement in student performance across multiple subjects. The FAST assessments, administered three times a year as part of the state’s progress monitoring system, provided a comprehensive look at the district’s academic growth. The final Spring assessment (PM3) confirmed a notable upward trend in performance, with BCPS students showing consistent improvements in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and the various End-of-Course (EOC) exams over the past few years.

BCPS has made remarkable strides since the 2022/23 school year, with cumulative year-end results for the past three academic years showing significant increases across nearly all tested subjects. For example, in English Language Arts (ELA) for grades 3-10, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding on-grade-level performance rose from 51% in 2022/23 to 61% in 2024/25, a solid 10% increase. Similarly, Mathematics scores for grades 3-8 and EOC exams saw an 11% increase, rising from 51% to 62% over the same period.

End-of-Course exams have also seen substantial improvement. For Algebra 1, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding performance expectations grew by 14%, from 48% in 2022/23 to 62% in 2024/25. Geometry students showed a similarly impressive improvement, with scores rising by 16%, from 44% to 60%. The improvements in science were also noteworthy, with grade 5 science performance increasing by 11%, from 46% to 57%, and grade 8 science performance growing by 10%, from 47% to 57%.

The EOC exam results for high school subjects demonstrated even stronger growth. In Biology 1, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations increased by 14%, from 62% in 2022/23 to 76% in 2024/25. U.S. History also saw a significant jump, with scores climbing by 14%, from 61% to 75%. Civics students showed a more modest but still notable increase of 8%, from 64% to 72%.

These results reflect a combination of factors that have contributed to BCPS’s success. Strong leadership, dedicated teachers, a focus on curriculum improvements, and community-wide involvement have all played a key role in driving academic achievement. The district’s commitment to providing high-quality education and fostering a supportive learning environment has clearly paid off, especially in comparison to the state’s overall performance.

As the results continue to roll in, the BCPS leadership remains committed to maintaining this upward trajectory. Superintendent Dr. Hepburn expressed confidence that the district’s focus on strategic improvements and targeted support will continue to yield strong results. “We know that consistent effort and a focus on addressing each student’s individual needs are crucial to our success,” he said. “We’re excited to build on this progress in the years ahead.”

The statewide assessment results for Spring 2025 provide a snapshot of academic performance across the state, but for BCPS, the achievement is even more significant, given the context of the ongoing efforts to close learning gaps exacerbated by the pandemic. These results show that Broward County’s students are not only catching up but excelling, positioning them for continued success in future academic challenges.

To explore the full results and access additional information, including district-level performance data, the Florida Department of Education has made the results available online at Florida DOE website.

BCPS’s performance serves as a model of what can be accomplished through strong community collaboration, focused leadership, and a commitment to excellence in education. With continued efforts and a shared vision, the district looks to build on this momentum, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
