Broward Sheriff’s Office Deerfield Beach District arrests a young man suspected of scamming an elderly resident out of tens of thousands of dollars

Deerfield Beach, Florida – Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Deerfield Beach District have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a bank scam that preyed on an elderly resident, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars. The arrest underscores the growing prevalence of financial fraud targeting senior citizens, a trend that has alarmed law enforcement agencies across Broward County and the nation.

The investigation began after BSO detectives received a tip from the South Florida Fraud Task Force and the FBI. According to authorities, the victim received a phone call from an individual claiming to be a Wells Fargo representative. The caller informed the victim that someone was attempting to withdraw $20,000 from his bank account, creating a sense of urgency and fear.

At that point, another person joined the call, posing as an “investigator.” This second caller instructed the victim to withdraw over $20,000 in cash and send it to an address in the 200 block of Northeast 40th Street in Deerfield Beach. Trusting the instructions, the victim followed through and sent the money as directed.

BSO detectives traced the funds to Omari Burke, who they say posted images on social media boasting about the money he had received from the scam. This social media activity provided key evidence that helped investigators identify and locate Burke.

Burke was arrested on September 16 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. He faces multiple charges, including obtaining property over $20,000 by fraud, money laundering, unlawful use of a two-way communications device, defrauding a financial institution, and grand theft on a person 65 years of age or older.

Detectives warn that Burke may not have acted alone and that similar scams could have been carried out against other senior citizens. “Scams like this one have become all too frequent in Broward County and across the country, and BSO detectives hope this victim’s experience prevents other individuals from being victimized,” a spokesperson said.

Authorities emphasized that these types of scams often involve high-pressure tactics designed to make victims act quickly, which can cloud judgment and lead to significant financial losses. Scammers frequently impersonate bank employees, law enforcement officers, or government representatives, creating a false sense of legitimacy.

BSO provided several safety tips to help residents avoid falling victim to similar schemes:

• If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a bank employee about potential fraud, immediately hang up and contact your bank directly using the number on your bank statement or official website.
• Never provide unknown callers with personal information, PINs, items, or money.
• Banks will never instruct you to withdraw funds and send them via a ride-share service.
• No government agency or law enforcement officer will call requesting money.
• Be cautious of phishing emails and avoid clicking links from unknown sources.
• If a call seems suspicious or high-pressure, hang up and report it to local law enforcement.

The BSO encourages anyone living in a jurisdiction they serve to contact their non-emergency line at 954-764-HELP (4357) if they believe they have been targeted by a similar scam. Detectives are continuing their investigation into Burke and any potential accomplices, aiming to prevent further instances of fraud and to hold those responsible accountable.

“These scams are devastating not just financially but emotionally for our community members, especially our elderly residents,” said a BSO representative. “We want people to understand that vigilance, awareness, and following simple safety steps can make a significant difference in preventing fraud. Scammers rely on fear and confusion, and by educating the public, we can reduce the risk of victimization.”
