Broward County, Florida – Students at Central Park Elementary School in Plantation, Florida, got a high-energy start to their week on Monday, October 6, as they helped kick off the Miami Heat’s “How Low Can You Go?” competition with an exciting pep rally. The event featured the Miami Heat Extreme Team and team mascot Burnie, along with teachers, administrators, and district representatives, all coming together to celebrate the school’s remarkable environmental achievements.

The “How Low Can You Go?” challenge encourages schools across the region to reduce energy and water consumption throughout the school year. Central Park Elementary made an impressive impact during the 2024/25 competition, cutting its energy usage by 35 percent compared to the previous year. That reduction—equivalent to 187,904 kWh—resulted in cost savings of nearly $18,790 for the school.

The pep rally was designed not only to celebrate the students’ accomplishments but also to reinforce the importance of environmental stewardship. The event coincided with Green Sports Day, an initiative that connects sustainability efforts with athletic events to show young people how small actions can make a difference.

Through cheers, music, and interactive demonstrations led by the Miami Heat Extreme Team, students learned how their efforts at home and school contribute to preserving natural resources. Kindergarten through second-grade students attended the first session from 8:30 to 9 a.m., followed by third- through fifth-grade students from 9:10 to 9:40 a.m. The split schedule allowed all students to participate fully while keeping the energy high for everyone involved.

“Winning the How Low Can You Go? competition shows that students really can make a difference when it comes to energy conservation,” said a school spokesperson. “The pep rally was a fun way to reward students for their hard work and inspire them to continue making environmentally conscious choices every day.”

Burnie, the team mascot, along with the Extreme Team, helped students get energized with games and activities that highlighted the connection between sports, teamwork, and environmental responsibility. The experience emphasized that protecting the planet can be fun, interactive, and rewarding when students work together toward a common goal.

Beyond the immediate celebration, the competition and pep rally also aim to instill lasting habits in students. By understanding how to reduce energy consumption and appreciating the impact of their actions, students are more likely to carry sustainable practices into their homes and communities.

With their impressive energy savings and enthusiastic participation in the pep rally, Central Park Elementary has set an example for other schools in the district and across the region. The combination of competition, celebration, and education creates a memorable experience that reinforces the message that every individual can contribute to a greener future.

As the school year continues, students at Central Park Elementary are encouraged to maintain their energy-conscious habits and look for new ways to reduce consumption. The Miami Heat’s initiative demonstrates that environmental stewardship can be both fun and impactful, providing students with the tools and motivation to make a real difference in their world.
