City of Weston and Broward Sheriff’s Office emphasize safety rules for e-bike and e-scooter riders in the community

Weston, Florida – As micromobility continues to grow in popularity, the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) are stepping up efforts to ensure riders of electric bicycles, scooters, and other devices understand the rules of the road and ride safely. With more residents turning to e-bikes and e-scooters for commuting, recreation, and errands, authorities are reminding the community that safety, awareness, and responsibility are key to preventing accidents and injuries.

Electric bicycles and scooters have the same legal rights and responsibilities as traditional bicycles, meaning they are allowed on roads, bike lanes, multi-use paths, and sidewalks where bicycle travel is permitted. They are not allowed on limited-access highways. Riders are expected to obey all traffic laws, including following traffic signals, riding with traffic, and adhering to speed limits.

“Riders must understand that just because their device is electric doesn’t mean they are exempt from traffic rules,” said a spokesperson from BSO. “E-bikes and e-scooters can reach high speeds quickly, and controlling them requires skill, attention, and proper safety measures.”

Helmets and Protective Gear

The law requires riders under the age of 16 to wear a helmet at all times, but safety experts recommend helmets for riders of all ages. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in accidents, and wearing one is considered a basic precaution for anyone riding an e-bike or e-scooter. Riders are also urged never to wear earbuds while operating their device, as listening to music or calls can distract from the sounds of traffic, pedestrians, and other hazards.

Parents and guardians play a critical role in ensuring safety. According to State Statute 316.2065(8), “No parent of any minor child and no guardian of any minor ward may authorize or knowingly permit any such minor child or ward to violate any of the provisions of this section.” This means that adults are legally responsible for making sure minors follow all rules, from helmet use to obeying traffic laws.

Rules of the Road

Riders are reminded that yielding to pedestrians is mandatory. When passing, an audible signal such as a bell, horn, or verbal warning is required. At intersections, e-bike and e-scooter riders must come to a complete stop at stop signs and yield to other traffic when entering the roadway or crossing driveways. Observing proper lane usage, speed limits, and traffic signals is not only legally required but essential for reducing the risk of collisions.

“Speed has a direct relationship with the severity of injuries in crashes,” a BSO representative explained. “Controlling your speed and braking early can make the difference between a minor scrape and a serious injury. Parents may even consider purchasing a speedometer for their children’s devices to help monitor safe speeds.”

Visibility Matters

Staying visible to drivers and pedestrians is a top priority, especially during low-light conditions. Riders are encouraged to use lights on their devices and wear bright or reflective clothing to make themselves more noticeable. These measures are particularly important during early mornings, evenings, or in inclement weather when visibility is reduced.

Know Your Devices

Not all electric devices are treated the same under the law. While e-bikes and e-scooters share bicycle rights, electric motorcycles (E-Motos) are not street legal and cannot be operated on sidewalks. Parents are urged to know before they buy to ensure they select devices appropriate for their child’s age, skill level, and the legal framework of their community.

Community Education and Responsibility

The City of Weston and BSO emphasize that safety is a shared responsibility. By educating riders on traffic laws, proper protective equipment, and responsible riding habits, authorities hope to reduce accidents and ensure that micromobility remains a safe and viable option for residents. Families, schools, and community organizations are encouraged to reinforce these messages and lead by example.

With micromobility becoming an increasingly common mode of transportation, the need for awareness, preparation, and adherence to safety guidelines has never been greater. E-bikes and e-scooters offer convenience and enjoyment, but they also come with risks that can be mitigated through proper education, vigilance, and protective measures.

For residents of Weston and Broward County, riding safely is more than a legal obligation—it’s a community effort. By following rules, wearing protective gear, controlling speed, and remaining visible, riders can enjoy the benefits of e-bikes and e-scooters while protecting themselves and those around them.

For more information on e-bike and e-scooter regulations and safety tips, the City of Weston and BSO encourage residents to visit official city and law enforcement websites or contact their offices directly. Safety starts with knowledge, preparation, and a commitment to responsible riding.
