Fort Lauderdale, Florida – American Heritage Schools, a hallmark of academic excellence for 61 years, has once again distinguished itself as a top-performing institution in the state and nation. For the 16th consecutive year, the school boasts the highest number of National Merit® Scholar Semifinalists in Florida, with a remarkable 87 seniors from the Class of 2026 achieving this prestigious honor. This includes 57 students from the Broward Campus and 30 from the Palm Beach Campus, showcasing a consistent culture of achievement that spans both campuses.

In addition to the semifinalists, another 92 seniors earned the recognition of National Commended Scholar, further reflecting the depth of talent and dedication among the student body. These accolades highlight not only the students’ intellectual capabilities but also the supportive and rigorous academic environment fostered by American Heritage Schools.

The Broward Campus ranks as the No. 1 school in Florida and the No. 2 private school in the U.S. for the number of National Merit Scholar Semifinalists, while the Palm Beach Campus holds the title of No. 1 in Palm Beach County, No. 2 in Florida, and No. 7 private school nationally. Combined, students from both campuses represent 9% of all semifinalists in Florida, meaning that roughly one in seven students at American Heritage Schools is recognized as a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist. These numbers underscore the school’s enduring legacy of cultivating academic excellence.

“The National Merit Scholarship Program is the most prestigious academic award a high school senior can receive,” said Dr. Douglas Laurie, president of American Heritage Schools. “Year after year, our students continue to raise the bar of academic excellence. Their success in the National Merit program is a reflection of their hard work, the dedication of our teachers, and a school environment that challenges and inspires. We are proud to see them recognized among the very best in the nation.”

The recognition carries more than prestige; it also opens doors to millions of dollars in potential scholarships and opportunities at some of the most elite universities in the country. Institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, the University of Chicago, and Vanderbilt University have historically welcomed a high number of National Merit Scholars, giving these students a significant advantage in their pursuit of higher education.

For the students themselves, the achievement represents both personal accomplishment and a testament to the supportive framework of their schools. Daniela Staton, a senior at the Palm Beach Campus from Delray Beach, reflected on the honor: “To be a part of the National Merit Group is honestly amazing, and I think it’s just a testament to the incredible opportunities, resources, and support we have here at American Heritage.”

Ramon Diaz, a senior at the Broward Campus from Miami Lakes, also praised the school’s preparation: “American Heritage teachers have very challenging tests and the curriculum is very intense, but they do a very good job in preparing you for those tests. I’d like to share with other students that anything is possible. If you work hard, if you put the right amount of hours into it, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.”

The school’s achievements extend beyond the National Merit program. 95% of American Heritage students passed their AP exams with scores of 3 or higher, compared to 69% across Florida and 73% globally. This exceptional performance demonstrates the school’s commitment to preparing students not only for national competitions but also for the demands of college-level coursework. It also solidifies the school’s reputation as a leading institution for college preparation nationwide.

The success of American Heritage Schools is deeply rooted in its rigorous curriculum, experienced faculty, and a culture that values both academic excellence and character development. From the earliest grades, students are immersed in a challenging environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and intellectual risk-taking, building the foundation for accomplishments like the National Merit Scholar recognition.

This continued recognition reflects a remarkable consistency in educational quality. For 12 consecutive years, American Heritage Schools has ranked as the No. 1 or No. 2 private school in the nation for the highest number of National Merit Scholar Semifinalists, highlighting its enduring position at the forefront of academic achievement.

Dr. Laurie emphasizes that while awards and rankings are important, the core mission of American Heritage Schools is to cultivate leaders, innovators, and responsible citizens. “We focus on developing the whole student, providing opportunities for intellectual growth, leadership, and service,” he said. “Our National Merit Scholars are a reflection of this holistic approach and of the exceptional community of students, parents, and teachers who make it possible.”

With the Class of 2026, American Heritage Schools continues to exemplify academic excellence, perseverance, and ambition, inspiring future generations to pursue knowledge and achievement. These students’ accomplishments demonstrate that with rigorous preparation, a supportive learning environment, and a commitment to hard work, academic excellence is not just attainable but expected.
