Authorities remind the public that off-road vehicles must stay off public roads to keep communities safe
Broward County, Florida – Local authorities are reminding residents that riding all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility task vehicles (UTVs), and dirt bikes on public roads is not only illegal but extremely hazardous. These vehicles are designed for off-road use, meaning trails, fields, and private property—not streets crowded with cars, trucks, and pedestrians.
“Serious injuries can occur in just seconds,” safety officials caution, emphasizing that the risks of collisions, rollovers, and loss of control are much higher when off-road vehicles are operated on public roadways. Unlike cars and motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs lack essential safety features such as turn signals, adequate lighting, seat belts, and crash protection. Without these, riders are more vulnerable to harm, and other drivers are put at risk.
Violating laws related to off-road vehicles can carry significant consequences. Fines, vehicle impoundment, and even criminal charges are possible, officials note, and the consequences increase when an accident causes injury or property damage. Authorities stress that keeping these vehicles off the streets is about more than following the law—it is about protecting the community.
Many incidents involving off-road vehicles occur when thrill-seekers underestimate the dangers of riding on paved roads. The compact size, high acceleration, and agility of ATVs and UTVs might seem fun in the moment, but these same features can make it nearly impossible to avoid collisions in traffic. Dirt bikes, often built for jumps and uneven terrain, are similarly unsafe on streets, where stopping distances and maneuverability differ drastically from off-road environments.
