Broward County, Florida – Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is kicking off a month-long celebration of Computer Science Education this December with an exciting focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Building on more than a decade of success with The Hour of Code, BCPS is taking the next step into the future with a new global initiative called The Hour of AI.

The initiative encourages students across the District to take part in at least one hour of AI activities from December 1 through December 19, 2025. Whether students are just starting to explore AI or already have some experience, the program is designed to be accessible and engaging. “With support from the BCPS Applied Learning Department, students across the District will engage in interactive, easy-to-follow activities designed to help them understand how AI works, explore core concepts, and learn to use the technology responsibly to make a positive impact,” officials said.

Students will have access to a wide range of AI-focused resources, including Code.org, Minecraft, MakeCode, Micro:bit, and Family STEM Nights. These platforms offer hands-on, interactive experiences that aim to make learning about AI fun while also giving students practical knowledge about how the technology can be used in everyday life.

In addition to the district-wide activities, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn will personally participate in The Hour of AI alongside fifth-grade students at Liberty Elementary School in Margate on December 11, 2025. The event will begin at 10:15 a.m., and media outlets are invited to cover the occasion. The superintendent’s involvement highlights the District’s commitment to providing students with early exposure to AI and fostering excitement about technology.

BCPS officials emphasize that initiatives like The Hour of AI are part of the District’s ongoing efforts to maintain its leadership role in computer science education at both the state and national level. By integrating AI into the curriculum and encouraging students to explore its potential, BCPS aims to prepare young learners for future careers in technology while instilling responsible and ethical use of emerging tools.

The program also builds on the success of previous efforts like The Hour of Code, which introduced thousands of students to programming and computational thinking over the years. With AI becoming an increasingly important part of the modern world, BCPS is ensuring that students have the skills and understanding they need to navigate and shape the future.
