Broward County, Florida – A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is alive today thanks to the protection of a ballistic vest after being shot by a suspect during a dramatic confrontation in Margate. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has launched an investigation into the incident, which unfolded after a strong-armed robbery at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

The situation began when the Seminole Police Department requested assistance from BSO to apprehend the robbery suspect. Members of BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT) and Aviation Unit joined the pursuit, which led them through North Lauderdale and ultimately into the city of Margate. The suspect, identified as Carlos Robinson, was eventually tracked to a residential neighborhood, where deputies attempted to make contact.

According to investigators, deputies issued commands for Robinson to exit his vehicle and tried to deescalate the situation using less-lethal measures. However, Robinson did not comply. He was armed and fired at deputies, striking a BSO North Lauderdale district deputy. Fortunately, the deputy’s ballistic vest absorbed the impact, preventing life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement returned fire during the encounter, striking Robinson. The Margate Police Department’s SWAT team then intervened, detaining him safely. First responders provided immediate medical attention to both the injured deputy and Robinson, who were transported to local hospitals. The deputy was treated for injuries sustained and has since been released. No other deputies or residents were harmed during the incident.

Robinson now faces a wide array of serious charges. These include attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest with violence, and an active warrant from Palm Beach County. The severity of these charges reflects the dangerous nature of the confrontation.

FDLE is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting, while BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are examining the events leading up to the incident. BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is also conducting an administrative review. Meanwhile, the six deputies who discharged their weapons during the confrontation have been placed on administrative assignment while the investigation continues.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that this incident highlights the importance of protective equipment for deputies working in high-risk situations. The ballistic vest worn by the North Lauderdale deputy played a crucial role in preventing potentially fatal injuries.

Residents and witnesses in the Margate neighborhood were not physically harmed, but the dramatic events serve as a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily. Authorities encourage anyone seeking more information about the original robbery that led to the pursuit to contact the Seminole Police Department.

This incident also underscores the coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies. The combined efforts of the BSO, Margate Police Department, and Seminole Police Department were critical in safely apprehending a dangerous suspect and preventing further harm to the public.

Investigators are reviewing all available evidence, including witness statements, surveillance footage, and ballistics reports, to ensure a thorough understanding of the events. The ongoing administrative and criminal investigations will help determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and guide any necessary policy or procedural adjustments.

In the meantime, the deputy’s survival is a testament to the lifesaving technology and training that law enforcement officers rely on in the line of duty. While the incident was harrowing, the coordinated response and protective measures ensured that both the deputy and the community remained safe.
