Tri-Rail celebrates a record breaking year in 2025 as ridership surpasses 45 million rides across South Florida
South Florida – Tri-Rail capped off 2025 with a historic milestone, surpassing 4.5 million rides and setting a new all-time record for the regional commuter rail system, according to the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA). The achievement builds on an already impressive fiscal year, which also exceeded 4.5 million rides between July 2024 and June 2025, signaling continued growth and popularity for the rail service. The new numbers surpass Tri-Rail’s previous record of 4.4 million rides set in 2019, demonstrating a steady upward trend in ridership over the past several years.
“We were not kidding when we said last year that we planned to keep breaking our own records,” said Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Marci Woodward, Chair of the SFRTA Governing Board. “The value of this system speaks for itself, and it shows that more than ever we must continue to protect this essential service, which serves as a critical asset for the region.” Her remarks underscore the growing recognition of Tri-Rail as a vital component of South Florida’s transportation network, connecting passengers across multiple counties while helping ease congestion on roadways such as I-95.
The 2025 record highlights the system’s ability to serve a diverse range of passengers, from daily commuters traveling between Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties to seasonal visitors and leisure riders. Tri-Rail’s consistent growth reflects the increasing reliance on public transportation as the region’s population continues to expand. Calendar year 2024, for instance, ended with the system’s second-highest ridership total ever, foreshadowing the surge that followed in 2025.
“Our passengers are the lifeblood of this system and we are deeply grateful for their continued support,” said David Dech, SFRTA Executive Director. “We will repay that trust by continuing to enhance the service in every way possible and try to provide the best possible travel experience that South Florida deserves.” Dech’s statement reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to improving service quality, accessibility, and convenience for riders. Tri-Rail has invested in initiatives such as updated train schedules, upgraded station amenities, and enhanced safety measures to ensure a positive experience for its passengers.
Tri-Rail has also maintained a strong presence in special event transportation, beginning the year with New Year’s Special Service that offered post-midnight trains for partygoers celebrating at Bayfront. Looking ahead, the system is preparing to accommodate large crowds for Miami Freedom Park’s inaugural season and is playing a key role in Miami-Dade County’s transportation planning for the FIFA World Cup. Officials anticipate providing service for both World Cup matches and associated Fan Festival events, highlighting Tri-Rail’s flexibility and capacity to support major regional gatherings.
Transportation officials often describe Tri-Rail as the equivalent of an additional lane on I-95, a metaphor that reflects the system’s role in reducing roadway congestion while connecting communities across South Florida. Serving as a multimodal hub, the system links passengers to buses, rideshare services, and other transit networks, anchoring the region’s transportation infrastructure. By offering a reliable alternative to driving, Tri-Rail helps support local economic growth, improve mobility, and provide a sustainable commuting option for thousands of residents and visitors.
The 2025 ridership milestone comes at a time when public transportation systems across the country are seeking to recover and expand in the wake of the pandemic. Tri-Rail’s continued growth demonstrates the system’s resilience and its capacity to adapt to changing travel patterns while maintaining high levels of service. It also reflects growing public confidence in rail transit as a practical, safe, and efficient option for regional travel.
With plans already underway for major events in 2026 and ongoing investments in infrastructure and service improvements, Tri-Rail appears poised to continue breaking records and playing an increasingly important role in South Florida’s transportation landscape. As ridership climbs and regional demand rises, the system will remain a cornerstone of mobility, connecting communities and offering a sustainable alternative to the crowded highways of the region.
For residents and visitors alike, Tri-Rail offers more than just a train ride; it represents a dependable link across South Florida, a commitment to public service, and a key driver of regional connectivity and economic vitality. With the momentum gained in 2025, the coming year promises to reinforce Tri-Rail’s position as an essential component of South Florida’s transportation network.
