Fisher Family Pier will close temporarily as construction begins on a new historic monument commemorating the Continental Marines
Pompano Beach, Florida – The City of Pompano Beach is set to temporarily close the Fisher Family Pier as construction begins on a new historic monument commemorating a key moment in American history. The project, a partnership with the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution, will see the installation of a 20-foot obelisk at the popular waterfront location. Construction is scheduled to start on Tuesday, January 20, and will require the pier to be closed for up to two days while crews work on-site.
The monument, unanimously approved by the City Commission in May 2024, will stand 20 feet tall and weigh approximately 17,000 pounds. It is designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the March 1776 landing of the Continental Marines in the Bahamas, which marked America’s first successful amphibious assault. Though often overlooked in history books, the event played a pivotal role in advancing the fight for American independence.
City officials and the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution emphasized the significance of the location. After an extensive search for a southeastern site with historical and community relevance, the Fisher Family Pier and the adjacent Fishing Village area were selected as ideal settings for the monument. Officials noted that the site offers both visibility and accessibility, allowing residents and visitors alike to reflect on an important chapter in the nation’s founding.
“The monument reflects the mission of the Sons of the American Revolution: to honor patriot ancestors, support communities, and educate and inspire future generations about the nation’s founding principles,” said a spokesperson for the organization. By placing the obelisk at the pier, the society hopes to create a lasting educational and cultural landmark that will engage the public while honoring the bravery and vision of America’s early military forces.
The Fisher Family Pier, a popular destination for locals and tourists, will be closed only temporarily to accommodate construction. Officials assure residents that the brief closure is necessary for safety and efficiency while crews install the massive structure. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we work to bring this important piece of history to Pompano Beach,” city officials said.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the monument’s completion is planned for March 14, 2026, at the Fisher Family Pier. The event will mark the official unveiling of the obelisk and provide an opportunity for residents, visitors, and history enthusiasts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Continental Marines’ landing.
Once completed, the monument will serve as both a tribute to a critical moment in American history and a new focal point for the pier area. The project reflects a broader effort by the city to combine cultural preservation with community engagement, offering an educational and inspiring landmark for generations to come.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan their visits around the temporary closure and look forward to the unveiling of the historic monument this spring. The project promises to add a significant new dimension to the Fisher Family Pier, connecting the city’s waterfront with the nation’s founding story in a meaningful way.
