City of Plantation honored as Broward County Public Schools’ Municipal Partner of the Year for its strong commitment to students and schools

Plantation, Florida – The City of Plantation has earned a major recognition for its work with local schools, being named Broward County Public Schools’ Municipal Partner of the Year. The award highlights municipalities that show strong, consistent support for education and student development across the district.

The announcement was made during a ceremony held on April 29, where Broward County Public Schools acknowledged the city’s ongoing commitment to strengthening ties between local government and the school community. Officials say the recognition reflects years of steady involvement rather than a single project or initiative.

According to the city, Plantation’s elected officials, along with staff from multiple departments including police, fire rescue, parks and recreation, and the public library, as well as members of the Educational Advisory Board, collectively dedicate around 3,000 hours each year to supporting schools. That effort, they note, directly or indirectly impacts more than 10,000 students, teachers, and administrators.

City programs range from hands-on classroom support to broader educational enrichment efforts. One of the best-known initiatives is Reading Buddies, which encourages elementary school students to practice reading in a relaxed and engaging way by reading aloud to a stuffed animal. While simple in concept, the program is designed to build confidence in early learners and make reading feel less intimidating.

At the high school level, the city partners with Junior Achievement to provide students with real-world learning opportunities, including pathways that allow participants to earn plant operator licenses. These efforts are intended to connect classroom learning with practical career skills, giving students a clearer view of potential future jobs.

Mayor Nick Sortal emphasized that the city’s commitment is driven by a shared sense of responsibility toward its young residents.

“The passion shown by our elected officials, first responders, staff and volunteers has become contagious,” Mayor Nick Sortal said. “The overarching theme we convey to our schools is ‘We’re here for you.’”

He added a reminder of the close relationship between the city and its schools, saying, “After all, they’re our residents.”

Beyond academic support, Plantation’s school resource officers play a significant role in maintaining safe and supportive environments on campus. Officials say their responsibilities extend beyond security, with officers often acting as mentors, coaches, and informal counselors for students. This approach, the city notes, helps contribute to a more positive school climate overall.

In recent years, Plantation has also expanded its programming to meet changing student needs. Newer initiatives include a multi-generational community garden project, which allows students to earn service hours while engaging with the environment and learning practical skills. The city has also introduced teen-focused spaces for social connection, including structured hang time activities and trivia events designed to encourage interaction and engagement outside the classroom.

City leaders say the recognition as Municipal Partner of the Year reflects a broader philosophy of involvement, where education is seen as a shared responsibility between schools and the community. With thousands of volunteer hours and a wide range of programs already in place, Plantation officials say they intend to continue building on that foundation in the years ahead.
