Introducing BSO Weston executive lieutenant Peter Geary Jr. and his nearly two decades of law enforcement experience and leadership service
Broward County, Florida – The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Weston District has a new leader at its operational helm. Lieutenant Peter Geary Jr. has officially been appointed as Executive Officer (XO), stepping into the role previously held by Lt. Michael Wagener. His arrival brings a blend of field experience, investigative leadership, and homeland security expertise that spans nearly two decades within the agency.
Lt. Geary’s journey with the Broward Sheriff’s Office began in 2007, when he first joined as a road patrol deputy. Early assignments placed him in North Lauderdale, where he worked patrol operations and later took on the additional responsibility of field training officer. Those early years, marked by constant field exposure, helped shape the foundation of his law enforcement career.
Not long after, he transitioned into an educational role as a police academy advisor at Broward College, helping train new recruits entering the profession. That period reflected a shift toward mentorship and leadership, something that would later define much of his career path.
In 2018, Geary advanced to the rank of Sergeant. His responsibilities expanded significantly as he supervised road patrol operations in the City of Lauderdale Lakes and Unincorporated Central Broward. He later moved into the Child Protective Investigations Section, where he served as an administrative sergeant, working on sensitive and complex cases involving vulnerable populations.
His promotion to Lieutenant came in 2020, marking another major step forward. In that role, he served as Executive Officer for the Child Protective Investigations Section before moving into the Homeland Security Section within BSO’s Strategic Investigations Division. There, his oversight included a wide range of specialized units such as the Covert Electronic Surveillance Unit, Digital Forensics Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC), Homeland Security/Counterterrorism Unit, and Strategic Intelligence Unit.
Geary also served as co-commander of the South Florida ICAC Task Force, coordinating regional efforts in investigations tied to online child exploitation and broader homeland security concerns. His work in this area placed him at the center of multi-agency operations across South Florida, reinforcing collaboration between law enforcement partners.
In 2025, his career path shifted again when he joined BSO’s Training & Organizational Development Division. There, he focused on strengthening internal leadership programs and helping implement a modern Learning Management System designed to improve training accessibility and efficiency across the agency.
Academically, Lt. Geary holds a Master of Science degree in Disaster & Emergency Management from Nova Southeastern University, along with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology and Middle Eastern Studies from Florida State University. His professional achievements include earning the Southern Police Institute’s Command Development Course Directors Award as valedictorian, as well as receiving both a Public Safety Special Operations Award and a Lifesaving Award.
Behind the professional record, however, is a personal story shaped by global experience and community ties. A native South Floridian, Geary grew up in Cooper City. While studying at Florida State University, he traveled abroad to Lebanon and found himself there during the 2006 Lebanese–Israeli War, an experience that left a lasting impression on his perspective of global conflict and public safety.

He later participated in a law enforcement exchange program in Israel through BSO, an opportunity he described as both meaningful and highly educational. Those international experiences added another layer to his understanding of security, intelligence, and cross-border cooperation.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Lt. Geary is known for his passion for cycling. He has completed multiple long-distance rides to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week, beginning journeys from places as far as Missouri, Boston, and Jacksonville. These endurance rides reflect a personal commitment to honoring fallen officers and supporting law enforcement families.
These days, his focus has shifted closer to home. Lt. Geary and his wife are raising their three toddlers, a responsibility that occupies much of his time outside of work. Despite the demands of leadership, he remains deeply committed to balancing family life with public service.
As he begins his new role in Weston, Lt. Geary says he is ready for the next chapter of his career. Community leaders and colleagues are also expressing confidence in his appointment, noting his wide-ranging experience and steady progression through the ranks.
The Weston District now looks ahead to a new phase of leadership under Lt. Peter Geary Jr., as he works alongside Chief Sam Cavalieri to continue serving and protecting the community.
