BCPS launches expanded Summer BreakSpot program offering free meals to children and teens across Broward County

Broward County, Florida – As schools close for the summer break, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is stepping in with a wide-reaching program aimed at ensuring that children and teenagers continue to have access to healthy food throughout the summer months.

Starting Monday, June 8, 2026, BCPS will provide free meals for all children and teens 18 years old and under through Florida’s Summer BreakSpot program. The effort will run across 96 school sites in Broward County, offering breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and suppers at no cost to families.

The program is designed to fill a gap that often appears when school cafeterias close for the summer. For many families, school meals are a reliable source of daily nutrition during the academic year, and the Summer BreakSpot initiative aims to maintain that support even when classes are not in session.

There is no need for registration, application, or proof of income, making the program widely accessible to all eligible children and teens. Meals are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be consumed on-site at participating locations.

Officials emphasized that the program is not only about providing food, but also about supporting children’s overall well-being during the summer break, when routines often change and access to structured meals may become more limited.

“Broward County Public Schools is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our students and families year-round,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “Through Summer BreakSpot, we are proud to offer nutritious meals that help children stay fueled, active and ready to learn throughout the summer.”

Meal service times, schedules, and menu offerings will vary depending on location. Families are encouraged to check details for each participating site before visiting, as availability may differ across the 96 BCPS school locations involved in the program.

To help families find meal sites and service times, BCPS and program partners have made several resources available. Information can be accessed by visiting SummerBreakSpot.org or browardschools.com/summerfeeding. Families can also call 2-1-1 for assistance or text “Food” or “Comida” to 304-304 to locate nearby meal sites.

The Summer BreakSpot program operates statewide and is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In Florida, it is administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, ensuring coordination between federal and state agencies to support children during the summer months.

While the program is structured, its goal is simple: to make sure no child goes hungry when school is out. By offering free meals at dozens of local schools, BCPS hopes to ease some of the financial pressure on families while also maintaining a sense of stability for students during the break.

As summer begins and school hallways grow quiet, BCPS officials say the program reflects a continued commitment to students beyond the classroom. For many families across Broward County, the Summer BreakSpot initiative will serve as a practical resource during the months when school-based support systems are temporarily on pause.
