Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale police are investigating the discovery of a body found near a busy stretch of Commercial Boulevard, where detectives believe a fatal collision involving a bicycle may have occurred. The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine exactly what happened and whether a driver left the scene after the incident.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of West Commercial Boulevard at approximately 8:15 a.m. Monday after receiving a report of a body near the roadway. When police arrived, detectives began examining the scene and gathering evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the person’s death.

Early findings suggest the victim may have been riding a bicycle before being struck by a vehicle. Investigators are treating the incident as a suspected hit-and-run while continuing to piece together the events that led to the fatal collision.

Police have not publicly identified the deceased, and officials have not released information regarding the person’s age or gender. As of Monday, no arrests had been made, and investigators had not announced whether they had identified a vehicle or potential suspect connected to the case.

Detectives remained at the scene for several hours as they documented evidence and searched for clues that could help explain what happened. Authorities are expected to review any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras and speak with potential witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.

The latest incident comes just weeks after another fatal bicycle crash in Fort Lauderdale drew significant public attention. In that earlier case, a bicyclist was killed on the SE 17th Street Causeway bridge. Investigators later identified and arrested a suspect after reviewing surveillance video collected during the investigation.

The two incidents have renewed attention on bicycle safety and the importance of drivers remaining at crash scenes. While investigators have not confirmed whether Monday’s case involved a driver fleeing the area, they continue to examine evidence to determine whether that occurred.

Under Florida law, leaving the scene of a crash involving a death is considered a felony offense. Florida Statute 316.027 provides for serious criminal penalties, including possible prison time and the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license. If investigators identify a driver in the current case, prosecutors will determine whether criminal charges are appropriate based on the evidence collected during the investigation.

For now, Fort Lauderdale police have released only limited information as detectives continue their work. Officials have not indicated when the victim’s identity will be made public or whether additional details about the investigation will be released.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist detectives to come forward. Police are expected to provide further updates as more facts become available and the investigation progresses.
