BCPS launches AI-powered school bus safety program to protect students during 2026/27 school year

Broward County, Florida – Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is taking a new step to improve student safety on the roads by introducing an advanced school bus monitoring program that uses artificial intelligence technology to help prevent dangerous driving behavior around stopped buses.

As part of the Broward County School Bus Safety Program, BCPS is partnering with BusPatrol to equip district school buses with automated stop-arm cameras designed to detect and record motorists who illegally pass buses while students are entering or leaving. The initiative will be in place for the 2026/27 school year and is intended to create a safer travel environment for thousands of students who rely on school transportation each day.

The program was introduced with participation from Broward County School Board members, BCPS Superintendent, representatives from the Broward County Schools Police, BCPS Student Transportation & Fleet Services, and BusPatrol officials. The announcement took place at the Student Transportation & Fleet Services facility in Oakland Park, where officials highlighted the importance of protecting students during their daily bus rides.

School officials said illegal passing of stopped school buses remains a serious safety concern across the country. Every year, millions of drivers ignore school bus stop signals and pass buses while children are getting on or off, creating potentially dangerous situations that can lead to serious injuries.

Through the partnership with BusPatrol, BCPS will use AI-powered technology to increase awareness among drivers and discourage violations. The cameras are designed to automatically identify vehicles that pass a stopped school bus illegally, helping authorities enforce Florida’s school bus safety laws.

The initiative will begin with a 30-day warning period, giving motorists time to become familiar with the new system and understand the importance of following school bus safety rules. After the warning period ends, enforcement will begin on September 9, 2026. Drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus may receive a $225 citation, as allowed under Florida law.

BCPS officials said the goal of the program is not only enforcement but also prevention. By using technology to monitor dangerous actions around school buses, the district hopes to encourage safer driving habits and remind motorists that student safety depends on everyone sharing the road responsibly.

The expansion of the safety program comes as schools prepare for another academic year and transportation teams work to ensure students can travel safely between home and school. With hundreds of buses operating throughout Broward County each day, officials believe the use of automated cameras will provide an additional layer of protection for students and bus drivers.

The BCPS Student Transportation & Fleet Services department will oversee the implementation of the technology across district buses. Officials expect the combination of improved awareness, automated detection, and legal enforcement to reduce illegal passing incidents and make school zones and bus stops safer.

The Broward County School Bus Safety Program represents the district’s continued effort to use modern tools and partnerships to address transportation challenges. By combining artificial intelligence technology with public awareness, BCPS aims to protect students and help ensure that every child can safely arrive at school and return home each day.
