West Palm Beach begins fire hydrant and water valve maintenance testing program

West Palm Beach, Florida – The City of West Palm Beach Public Utilities Department will begin a citywide fire hydrant and water valve maintenance program on Monday, August 3, as part of an ongoing effort to keep the local water distribution system operating safely and efficiently.

The maintenance work will continue through October 31, 2026, and will include testing water valves and flowing fire hydrants throughout the city’s service area. Officials said the routine checks are an important part of maintaining the infrastructure that supports reliable water service for residents and businesses.

By exercising water valves and inspecting fire hydrants, crews can confirm that key parts of the system are working properly and identify any issues before they become larger problems. The work also helps support emergency response efforts by ensuring fire hydrants remain ready for use when needed.

The City has hired Hydromax Utility Field Services to complete the maintenance activities. During the project, residents may see crews working throughout the community on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Because many of the city’s fire hydrants and water valves are located near or within roadway travel lanes, temporary traffic changes may occur in certain locations. Officials said crews may redirect vehicles around active work areas to allow employees to safely access and maintain the equipment.

The city is advising residents that some temporary changes in water appearance may occur during the maintenance process. Some customers may notice sediment or slight discoloration in their tap water after nearby testing activities are completed.

Officials emphasized that the water remains safe to drink. Residents who experience discoloration are encouraged to run cold water from their tap for one to two minutes, which should clear the issue and restore normal water appearance.

The maintenance program is part of the city’s regular efforts to protect its water infrastructure and provide residents with dependable, high-quality drinking water. Routine inspections and testing allow utility crews to maintain important equipment, improve system performance, and prepare the network for future needs.

City officials said residents do not need to take any special action unless they notice temporary water discoloration following nearby work. The maintenance activities are expected to continue across different areas of West Palm Beach over the coming months.
