Broward County, Florida – As the start of the 2026/27 school year approaches, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is preparing to welcome more than 236,000 students back into classrooms across the district. With the first day of school scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2026, teachers, administrators, transportation teams, and support staff are working behind the scenes to make sure schools are ready for a smooth and successful opening.

District officials are inviting media members to preview several back-to-school events highlighting new programs, student services, safety improvements, and other initiatives that will shape the upcoming academic year. The events will provide opportunities to meet BCPS leaders, teachers, and staff while showing families what they can expect when students return.

One of the first opportunities will focus on changes coming to school meals. On Tuesday, August 4, at 10 a.m., BCPS Food and Nutrition Services will host a special tasting event at South Broward High School in Hollywood to showcase new menu items planned for school cafeterias during the 2026/27 school year.

The event will give media members a chance to learn more about the district’s efforts to provide nutritious meals while also responding to student preferences. Food and Nutrition Services leaders and staff will be available for interviews, and attendees will be able to view and photograph several new menu options.

The featured items include the Arroz Con Pollo Bowl, Chicken Lo Mein with Vegetable Eggroll, Plant-Based Fiesta Wrap with Hummus, Plant-Based Fiesta Salad with Hummus, Cajun Fries, Street Corn, Burrito Bowl, and Jalapeno Egg Patty.

Transportation preparations will also be highlighted as BCPS works to ensure students arrive at school safely and on time. On Wednesday, August 5, at 10:30 a.m., media are invited to the BCPS Student Transportation & Fleet Services Central West Terminal in Davie to observe school bus operators conducting practice runs before the first day of classes.

During these practice runs, drivers review their assigned routes, become familiar with stops, identify possible traffic challenges, and prepare for the increased activity that comes with the beginning of a new school year.

A new safety feature will also be introduced this year, with school buses being equipped with automated cameras designed to improve safety at bus stops. Media opportunities will include interviews with transportation leaders and bus operators, as well as footage of buses leaving the terminal and drivers completing their route preparations.

Teachers and school staff will take center stage on Thursday, August 6, as educators return to campuses and begin final classroom preparations. At locations provided through RSVP, media will have the opportunity to see teachers transforming classrooms into welcoming learning environments.

From organizing materials and arranging classroom spaces to decorating rooms for students, teachers will be preparing for the first day of school. Interviews with educators and school leaders will provide insight into the work that happens before students walk through the doors.

The week of preparation will conclude with Space Florida Academy Day on Friday, August 7, at 10 a.m. at Miramar High School. BCPS and Space Florida will celebrate the launch of Space Florida Academy at nine district schools, creating new opportunities for students interested in aerospace, aviation, and engineering careers.

The program is designed to connect students with industry-focused learning experiences and provide hands-on opportunities related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Media members will be able to interview district leaders, school administrators, students, and Space Florida representatives while capturing demonstrations of aerospace and STEM activities.

Together, these events highlight the wide range of efforts taking place before the 2026/27 school year begins. From improving school meals and transportation safety to expanding career-focused learning opportunities, BCPS officials say the goal is to create a strong start for students and families.

With thousands of employees preparing schools across the county, the district is focused on ensuring that classrooms, buses, programs, and services are ready when students return on August 10. The back-to-school previews will provide a closer look at the teamwork and planning required to support one of the largest school districts in the state.
