BCPS welcomes students back to classrooms across Broward County as the 2026/27 school year officially gets underway

Broward County, Florida – Broward County Public Schools welcomed students back to classrooms across the District on Monday, August 10, officially opening the 2026/27 school year with a focus on academic achievement, expanded opportunities and safe learning environments.

The first day brought students, parents, teachers and school staff together as campuses returned to their usual rhythm. District leaders also spent the day visiting schools, getting a firsthand look at classrooms and highlighting programs designed to give students more ways to learn, explore their interests and prepare for what comes after graduation.

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn joined School Board members and other District leaders during the visits. Their focus included teaching and learning, innovative programs and the different opportunities being made available to students during the new school year.

“Today was a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Hepburn. “From the smiles and excitement of our students to the dedication of our teachers and staff, it was inspiring to see our schools come alive. We are beginning this school year with strong momentum, and we are focused on building on that success to ensure every student can thrive.”

The opening of the 2026/27 school year comes as BCPS continues working to build on recent academic results. The District has earned its third consecutive “A” grade from the state, providing a strong backdrop for the start of another school year.

District officials say the work will continue this year with a range of academic and career-focused initiatives. Students will have access to innovative academic programs, career and technical education, new career pathways and hands-on learning experiences.

Those programs are intended to give students preparation that extends beyond traditional classroom lessons. The District is seeking to help students develop skills and knowledge that can be useful as they move toward college, careers and other responsibilities later in life.

Career and technical education is also expected to play an important role in that effort. By expanding career pathways and practical learning opportunities, BCPS is giving students additional options for exploring possible fields while they are still in school.

School safety remains another major priority as students return. BCPS is continuing to invest in safety and security measures while also expanding the use of technology to support learning environments that are both engaging and focused on the future.

One of the new safety initiatives launching during the school year involves school buses. BCPS is partnering with BusPatrol on the Broward County School Bus Safety Program, which will use AI-powered stop-arm cameras installed on school buses.

The cameras are intended to discourage drivers from illegally passing buses when they are stopped to pick up or drop off students. The program will begin with a 30-day warning period before enforcement starts. Citations are scheduled to begin September 9.

For the youngest students, Monday represented an especially important milestone. Children entering kindergarten this year officially became members of the BCPS Class of 2039, beginning what will be a long journey through the District.

For families, the first day of kindergarten often marks a significant transition as children begin formal schooling. For BCPS, it also represents the arrival of a new group of students who will grow through the District’s academic programs over the years ahead.

After school visits throughout the day, BCPS held a First Day of School News Conference at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center. The event provided District officials with an opportunity to discuss the opening of schools and outline priorities for the 2026/27 academic year.

The start of a new school year is always a major undertaking for a large school district, requiring students, families, educators and support staff to adjust to new schedules and routines. This year’s opening also comes with an emphasis on continuing the academic progress BCPS has made while expanding opportunities for students.

With classrooms now active across Broward County, the District’s attention turns toward the months ahead. Academic programs, career preparation, hands-on learning, school safety and technology will all remain central parts of the effort to provide students with opportunities to succeed.

For BCPS students, however, the first day was ultimately about something more immediate — returning to school, seeing friends and teachers again, and beginning another year of learning. For the kindergarten class, it was the first step in a school journey that is scheduled to continue all the way to the Class of 2039.
