McNab Road bridge replacement in Pompano Beach gets revised November 1 reopening date after months of construction

Pompano Beach, Florida – The City of Pompano Beach has announced a revised timeline for the bridge portion of the McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project, with the bridge now expected to reopen to traffic by November 1, 2026.

The change comes after persistent rainfall during South Florida’s rainy season slowed construction work. City officials said the revised date depends on favorable weather and assumes there are no additional unforeseen issues that could affect the work.

While the bridge replacement schedule has shifted, the city said the change is not currently expected to delay the completion of the entire McNab Road project. The full streetscape and bridge replacement project remains scheduled to be completed by December 2026.

The project is taking place along an important east-west corridor that connects neighborhoods, schools, businesses and community spaces in Pompano Beach. McNab Road stretches across a busy part of the city, making the construction work significant for residents, commuters and other people who regularly travel through the area.

Mayor Rex Hardin acknowledged the effect the lengthy construction project has had on the community and thanked residents and businesses for their patience.

“The City understands the impact a project of this magnitude can have on residents, businesses, and everyone who travels through this corridor,” said Mayor Rex Hardin. “We appreciate the community’s continued patience as we work through weather and construction challenges to complete these important improvements. The result will be a safer, more resilient, and more accessible McNab Road that will serve our community for decades to come.”

The bridge being replaced dates back to 1959 and has reached the end of its useful life. City officials have also identified the existing structure as functionally obsolete. Replacing it is one of the priorities included in the voter-approved 2018 “G.O. Pompano!” Bond program.

The bridge work is part of a much larger effort covering McNab Road between South Cypress Road and Federal Highway. Rather than focusing only on the aging bridge, the project is designed to upgrade several parts of the corridor at the same time.

Planned improvements include new ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps, road resurfacing and upgraded lighting. The project also includes drainage improvements intended to address existing concerns, along with new facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Public transportation is included in the work as well. Bus stops and shelters are being improved, while utility infrastructure will also receive upgrades. Landscaping improvements are planned throughout the corridor, adding another element to the broader streetscape work.

The new bridge is being designed with safety, resiliency and navigability in mind. Once completed, it will replace the structure that has served the area for more than six decades.

City staff are continuing to work with the contractor, engineer and other members of the project team as construction moves toward its final stages. Officials said the remaining work is being advanced as efficiently as possible while maintaining the safety and quality standards required for the project.

For people who depend on McNab Road, the revised bridge schedule means the current disruption will continue longer than originally anticipated. However, the city said the overall project remains on track for completion in December.

The work represents a major investment in the corridor and is intended to address aging infrastructure while making McNab Road easier and safer to use for different types of travelers. Motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users are all expected to benefit from the improvements once the project is finished.

For now, construction crews will continue working through the remaining phases, with weather conditions remaining an important factor in the bridge replacement schedule. The city is asking residents, businesses and travelers to continue cooperating with the project team as work progresses toward the expected reopening and final completion later this year.
