Florida launches Workforce Pell Grant funding for short-term career training

Tallahassee, Florida – Florida is moving forward with a new federal financial aid program that will help eligible students pay for short-term workforce training programs aimed at preparing them for jobs in high-skill, high-wage and in-demand fields.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced September 17 that the state has released its initial list of short-term workforce programs that can qualify for the new Workforce Pell Grant program. The program took effect federally on July 1, 2026, expanding Pell Grant access to certain shorter training programs that can lead to recognized credentials and employment.

The Florida program is being built around the state’s existing workforce and education systems. Officials say eligible programs must be connected to occupations with strong labor demand or address important workforce needs in Florida communities and the state economy.

For students, the program is aimed at providing another way to gain career skills without having to spend several years completing a traditional degree program. Florida’s Department of Education says eligible programs must meet federal requirements for program length and instructional hours and lead to a recognized postsecondary credential.

“Florida is number one in workforce education, and the Workforce Pell Grant funding enables us to build on our track record of success,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “The programs eligible for Workforce Pell funding are preparing students for high-wage, in-demand careers. We’re glad that thousands more Floridians will be able to take advantage of these opportunities without needing to take out loans or break the bank.”

DeSantis has assigned Commissioner of Education Henry Mack to oversee the statewide implementation of Workforce Pell in Florida. The Department of Education is using two existing state resources to help identify programs that qualify: the Targeted Occupations List managed by FloridaCommerce and the CareerSource Florida Master Credential List.

The state’s Master Credentials List is used to identify credentials that have value in the labor market, including credentials recognized by employers and those that can support employment, higher wages and career advancement. Florida also uses labor market information and statewide workforce planning tools when determining which occupations and programs meet its priorities.

“By prioritizing short-term workforce training that allows students to earn a credential in as little as 8 weeks, the Workforce Pell Grant helps students earn the skills they need to enter the workforce with little to no debt,” said Commissioner of Education Henry Mack. “The programs identified as eligible for Workforce Pell funding are within high-wage and in-demand industries, ensuring students will be able to find fulfilling careers after completing their programs.”

The program is also designed to connect short-term training with longer career paths. Florida’s requirements include the use of stackable and portable credentials, allowing students to build on previous training and potentially continue their education or move into higher levels of employment.

Not every program automatically qualifies for the federal assistance. Institutions offering programs on Florida’s approved list must complete a certification process confirming that their programs meet federal requirements. The Florida Department of Education then reviews and validates that information.

Programs approved by the state are submitted to the U.S. Department of Education for Workforce Pell participation. Institutions must also make sure approved programs are included in their federal Title IV program inventory before eligible students can receive the funding through the standard Pell Grant process.

The state will also monitor the programs after they are approved. Workforce Pell programs must meet federal standards related to completion, job placement and economic value for students. Florida plans to review eligible programs annually so the list can change as labor market demand, program performance and credential requirements change.

The new federal program adds to Florida’s existing investment in career and technical education and other workforce initiatives. The state says more than $12 billion has been committed to workforce education and training during DeSantis’ administration. The 2026-27 state budget includes $732 million for workforce education programs, including funding for career and technical education, nursing education and apprenticeship programs.

Florida has also continued expanding apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship opportunities. In July, the state awarded $14.6 million through the Pathways to Career Opportunities Grant program to support 37 organizations and more than 8,000 students.

The Workforce Pell program now gives eligible Floridians another option for gaining job-specific training. Rather than requiring students to commit to a longer degree program, the new funding can be used for qualifying short-term programs that meet federal and state requirements.

The Florida Department of Education has published information about the state’s Workforce Pell implementation, including the current inventory of eligible programs and the process institutions must follow. Students and institutions can find additional information through the department’s Workforce Pell resources.
