Community Foundation of Broward secures $10 Million to fuel sustainable support for local nonprofit organizations

Broward County, Florida – In a monumental move that promises lasting support for local nonprofits, the Community Foundation of Broward has secured an extraordinary $10 million in ongoing funding for the Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence. This milestone achievement ensures that the center will continue its mission to support and empower Broward County’s nonprofit sector for generations to come.

The Community Foundation launched the Nonprofit Center in 2022, designed to amplify the critical work of nonprofit organizations that make a difference in the lives of Broward residents. From its inception, the center has aimed to provide essential tools, training, and resources that strengthen nonprofit capabilities, enabling these organizations to thrive and meet community needs more effectively.

The initial push for the Nonprofit Center’s success came in the form of a $5 million matching grant from the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, which played a pivotal role in jumpstarting the center’s fundraising efforts and its operations. This early investment was instrumental in allowing the center to quickly launch both in-person and online training sessions, while also developing a comprehensive Nonprofit Center website that houses a valuable resource library, nonprofit directory, consultant registry, and other tools designed to foster nonprofit success.

Now, less than three years after its inception, the Community Foundation of Broward has successfully raised the remaining $5 million, reaching the full $10 million mark. This funding includes the establishment of an endowment that guarantees permanent, sustainable support for the center’s work. This endowment is a vital component of the Community Foundation’s long-term strategy to ensure that the Nonprofit Center can continue providing crucial resources to Broward’s nonprofits far into the future.

The Nonprofit Center has quickly become a key resource for nonprofit professionals, volunteers, and supporters in Broward County. Housed at the Community Foundation, the center provides a broad range of services designed to enhance the capacity of local organizations. These services include training, continuing education, nonprofit capacity building, and the development of core mission work.

Through its easy-to-navigate website, the center offers essential tools for nonprofits, such as online courses, a resource database, and access to a nonprofit directory. Additionally, it fosters collaborations, mentoring opportunities, and connections that drive better outcomes in the community. These resources are particularly valuable for nonprofit organizations still recovering from the financial and operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

During its first two years of operation, the Nonprofit Center served nearly 5,000 participants, representing over 800 local nonprofits. Through workshops, training sessions, mentoring, and various convenings, the center has provided nonprofit organizations with the tools and skills needed to increase their impact. Moreover, the center’s online presence also made a significant impact in 2024, with more than 8,100 visitors accessing its website to take advantage of virtual classes, the resource database, and other helpful online tools.

Looking ahead, the Nonprofit Center has plans to expand its offerings even further. Future initiatives include launching a CEO/Executive Director certification program, which will be a critical resource for developing leadership within Broward’s nonprofit organizations. In addition, the center is working on collaborations to help nonprofits attract more diverse and engaged Board members. The Nonprofit Center will also continue to expand its online and in-person training options to reach even more individuals and organizations across the county.
