Nova Middle School pre-law students make history by securing third consecutive victory at the national “We the People” competition in 2025

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – In a stunning display of civic knowledge and teamwork, the pre-law students from Nova Middle School have achieved an unprecedented victory, securing their third consecutive national title at the prestigious “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” competition. Held from April 25-26, 2025, in Washington, D.C., this remarkable accomplishment solidifies the school’s standing as a powerhouse in academic excellence, particularly in the field of civic education.

The “We the People” competition is a rigorous test of students’ understanding of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and American government. It challenges students to demonstrate not only their knowledge of constitutional principles but also their ability to think critically, debate, and collaborate. Nova Middle School’s achievement this year marks a historic three-peat, following their victories in the 2023 and 2024 national competitions. Their outstanding performance in this year’s event caps off a year of impressive triumphs, including their first-place finish at the state “We the People” competition in January 2025, which earned them a spot in the national contest for the third consecutive year.

The success of the Nova Middle School team can be attributed to their unwavering dedication and the exceptional leadership provided by their teacher and coach, Kristin Murphy. Alongside her husband, Will Murphy, a fellow lawyer and coach, Kristin implemented an innovative training strategy that proved invaluable. One of the most notable elements of their preparation was transforming the 22-hour train ride to Washington, D.C., into an intensive study session, ensuring the team was as prepared as possible.

“The intensity and collaborative spirit forged during our train journey are instrumental in our team’s success,” said Kristin Murphy. “This three-peat is a testament to their extraordinary dedication and intellectual firepower. We couldn’t be prouder of these remarkable students.”

Throughout the competition, Nova’s students showcased their deep understanding of the nation’s founding principles, blending academic rigor with passionate debate. Their teamwork and ability to navigate complex questions about constitutional law and the workings of government impressed judges and fellow competitors alike. The achievement of a third consecutive national title is a testament to both their intellectual abilities and the extraordinary effort put forth by everyone involved in the program.

Beyond the competition itself, the students also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in American history during their journey to Washington, D.C. As part of their experience, the team toured several historically significant locations, such as Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, the U.S. Capitol, and the National Archives. In a heartwarming moment, the students watched the virtual award presentation from their tour bus as they continued their travels through Washington, D.C. The sense of excitement and accomplishment was palpable, as the team paused to celebrate their victory in the midst of their journey.
