Pompano Beach, Florida – The City of Pompano Beach has officially kicked off the construction of the long-awaited McNab Road Streetscape Improvement and Bridge Replacement Project, with work set to begin in mid-July 2025. This major initiative, backed by voters through the Go Bond initiative, will modernize a crucial east-west corridor, enhancing safety, connectivity, and the overall quality of life for the community.

“This is a project that the voters supported through the Go Bond initiative because it is essential for the future of our City,” said Mayor Rex Hardin. “While some patience will be required during construction, the outcome will create transformative benefits for Pompano Beach. We understand that construction can be disruptive, and we have been proactively communicating with HOAs and businesses that will be affected. We are dedicated to minimizing impacts and keeping everyone affected by this project informed every step of the way.”

The McNab Road corridor, which includes a bridge originally built in 1959, has long been a vital route connecting neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and community spaces. Over time, this essential passage has experienced significant wear and tear, leading to the need for substantial upgrades. The decision to address these concerns was bolstered by strong community feedback, making it a priority under the Go Bond initiative.

The McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project will span the area between South Cypress Road and Federal Highway. The primary goal is to replace outdated infrastructure and address several key issues that have long hindered the corridor’s functionality. The existing bridge is functionally obsolete, and narrow sidewalks, aging utilities, and frequent flooding have posed significant challenges to local residents and businesses.

As part of the project’s scope, the City of Pompano Beach plans to implement a series of critical upgrades to improve both the safety and accessibility of McNab Road for all users. These include:

• ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps to ensure accessibility for all residents, regardless of ability
• Road resurfacing, which will provide a smoother, safer ride for vehicles
• Lighting improvements designed to enhance visibility and security
• Upgraded drainage systems to prevent flooding and improve stormwater management
• New pedestrian and bike facilities to encourage sustainable transportation options
• Enhanced bus stops and shelters to improve public transportation access
• Utility infrastructure upgrades to meet modern standards and improve service reliability
• A full bridge replacement to enhance safety, navigability, and resilience, addressing current structural concerns
• Landscaping enhancements to create a more cohesive, attractive streetscape and improve walkability

The upgrades will create a safer and more connected environment for everyone who relies on McNab Road—whether they are driving, walking, biking, or taking public transit. This project will also have lasting benefits for local businesses and the community at large, with improved infrastructure helping to attract new development and foster a sense of pride in the area.

“This Complete Streets project will unlock a range of long-term benefits that go far beyond infrastructure,” said the City’s Director of Public Works. “Ultimately, the initiative will transform McNab Road and the surrounding bridge corridor into a thriving, livable community. We envision a place where people of all ages, abilities, and travel preferences feel safe, connected, and welcomed.”

Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, with different phases of the project taking place over the coming year. One of the most significant phases will be the replacement of the McNab Road Bridge, which is slated to begin in May 2026. During this period, there will be a temporary detour in place to ensure that traffic can continue to flow as smoothly as possible. Prior to this, single-lane access will be maintained to minimize disruptions.

While the construction will undoubtedly cause some inconveniences, the City has been proactive in keeping residents and businesses informed about the project’s progress. Public meetings, email updates, and community outreach efforts have been part of the City’s strategy to ensure that stakeholders are aware of the construction timeline and any potential impacts to their daily routines.

In addition to the physical improvements, the project aims to foster a stronger sense of community by creating an environment where people can gather, socialize, and enjoy the public spaces around them. With safer streets, more accessible pathways, and improved public transit options, McNab Road will serve as a more vibrant and inclusive corridor for residents and visitors alike.

“The McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project is a key element in our ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the City of Pompano Beach,” said Mayor Hardin. “We are excited to see this important project come to life, and we are committed to ensuring that the benefits of this transformation will be felt by our residents for many years to come.”
