Major $55 million FDOT project aims to improve the Sunrise Boulevard and I-95 interchange in South Florida starting July 21, 2025

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is advancing a major project aimed at improving the Sunrise Boulevard and I-95 interchange, enhancing the infrastructure, safety, and mobility in the area. This $55 million initiative will span several years, with work already underway to address the ongoing need for repairs and upgrades along this key stretch of roadway.

The project, which began construction in June 2025, is part of the broader Restoration, Rehabilitation, and Resurfacing (RRR) initiative, extending from I-95 to US 1. This extensive work is expected to take several years to complete, with an estimated finish date of early 2029. The focus is on bridge work and resurfacing along I-95 at Sunrise Boulevard, making improvements that are crucial to keeping traffic flowing smoothly and safely through this busy area.

Motorists can expect disruptions as a result of the construction, with the most immediate impact occurring from Monday, July 21 through Thursday, July 24, 2025. During these dates, the southbound lanes of I-95 at Sunrise Boulevard will be closed nightly, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. To minimize inconvenience, a detour route has been planned. Southbound traffic on I-95 will be rerouted via the exit ramp westbound on Sunrise Boulevard, then southbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The detour will end eastbound on Broward Boulevard, where drivers can access I-95 southbound again via the Broward Boulevard entrance ramp.

In addition to these road closures, the entrance to the I-95 southbound managed lanes at Sunrise Boulevard will also be closed during this period. Motorists wishing to use the managed lanes can instead access them at Broward Boulevard. To further assist with traffic control and ensure safety, the Florida Highway Patrol will be on-site. Detour signs will be posted to guide drivers along the rerouted routes.

For those who need real-time information and traffic updates, FDOT encourages motorists to visit their project website at www.d4fdot.com/bcfdot. Weekly updates will be posted to keep the public informed about any changes or further developments in the project timeline.

FDOT is committed to ensuring that the construction process runs smoothly and safely for all involved. While the temporary disruptions may cause some delays, the long-term benefits of the improvements will provide better infrastructure and safer driving conditions for years to come.

This multi-million-dollar effort reflects FDOT’s commitment to improving Florida’s transportation systems and ensuring that vital interchanges like the one at Sunrise Boulevard and I-95 remain efficient and safe for drivers and commuters. With careful planning and continued communication with the public, FDOT aims to enhance this key corridor and help reduce congestion in the future.
