West Palm Beach Police headquarters remains fully safe while city invests millions to modernize and extend its future

West Palm Beach, Florida – The West Palm Beach Police Department headquarters remains a secure and functional space for officers and staff, even as the City invests $6 million to modernize the aging facility. Officials say the ongoing project addresses long-standing maintenance issues, ensuring the building remains reliable for daily operations and prepared for decades to come.

Years of deferred upkeep left the headquarters facing challenges. Roof leaks and water intrusion, combined with outdated HVAC systems, created concerns about the building’s long-term usability. In response, the City launched a strategic remediation and modernization plan designed to resolve these issues systematically.

Since November 2024, the City has partnered with BELFOR Property Restoration, a nationally recognized remediation expert, along with The Mold Inspector, an independent contractor, to conduct thorough testing. BELFOR has determined that most areas can remain occupied during the remediation, with only brief relocations necessary where active work is underway.

The project, which began with smaller repairs in 2023, is now in full swing. In July 2023, the City allocated $40,050 for HVAC and VAV repairs to improve airflow and control humidity. By early 2024, roof leaks and water damage were identified as urgent issues, prompting a larger allocation of $700,000 in July 2024 for roof improvements and mold remediation. Since November 2024, extensive testing and remediation work has been underway, including full remediation of the 911 dispatch area and replacement of a leaking roof section in December 2024.

Looking ahead, the City plans to continue remediation through November 2025, focusing on areas that still show abnormal test results. Upgrades will include sealing the roof to prevent future leaks, modernizing the HVAC system with a UV sanitation component to ensure high air quality, waterproofing and repainting the building’s exterior, and replacing the gun training range. Officials aim to complete all work by August 2026, extending the building’s useful life and improving conditions for officers, staff, and visitors.
