Broward County will conduct aerial spraying to reduce mosquito populations in Davie and surrounding western communities this week

Broward County, Florida – Broward County officials announced that aerial spraying will take place over parts of western communities this week in an effort to reduce the growing number of mosquitoes that have been plaguing residents. The spraying will cover sections of Davie, Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Weston.
According to the Public Works Department’s Mosquito Control Section, the decision follows both a high volume of service requests and data gathered through mosquito surveillance efforts. Crews will begin flying missions between Sunday, August 31, and Wednesday, September 3, 2025, with operations scheduled to run between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. each day. Officials noted that weather conditions could delay or reschedule flights.
Targeting Nuisance Mosquitoes
The spraying will specifically target adult saltmarsh mosquitoes, a species known for traveling long distances from their breeding grounds in the Everglades. These insects are not associated with spreading illnesses such as Zika or dengue, but their aggressive biting habits have made them a persistent problem for both people and animals across the county.
“These mosquitoes are strong fliers and aggressive biters, often traveling many miles from their breeding sites,” officials said in announcing the plan. They emphasized that the aerial spraying is being conducted primarily to reduce the nuisance level that residents are experiencing in their neighborhoods.
Health and Safety Precautions
County officials are reminding residents who may have respiratory issues to remain indoors during the spraying window. The insecticide used is considered safe when applied as directed, but those with breathing difficulties could be more sensitive to the treatment.
In addition, residents who previously registered with the state to be notified of spraying events will receive alerts before flights take place.
Ongoing Mosquito Control Efforts
The Mosquito Control Section regularly treats areas throughout Broward County using a combination of backpack sprayers, truck-mounted equipment, and aerial missions. The decision on where and when to spray is based on both field data and calls from the public.
Officials stressed that residents also play an important role in reducing mosquito populations by removing potential breeding sites around their homes. Stagnant water in items such as buckets, birdbaths, flowerpots, or clogged gutters can quickly become mosquito breeding grounds.
Community members who need help can contact the county for support. “To request mosquito control service, call 311 or fill out the Mosquito Service Request Form,” the department advised.
Looking Ahead
While the current spraying campaign is limited to several nights, officials noted that mosquito control is an ongoing challenge in South Florida due to the climate and proximity to natural wetlands. Residents in the affected areas should expect to see aircraft flying low during the early morning hours as crews carry out the planned mission.
By addressing the mosquito surge now, county leaders hope to reduce the discomfort for residents and prevent the biting insects from overwhelming neighborhoods as late summer continues.
