Florida launches initiative to help prevent childhood hunger this summer through free meal programs

Florida – Florida is gearing up to tackle childhood hunger this summer through the Summer BreakSpot Program, and the state is calling on community partners to join the effort. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is inviting local nonprofits, schools, residential summer camps, and faith-based organizations to participate in providing free meals to children from low-income families across the state.

The Summer BreakSpot Program is designed to ensure that children who rely on school meals during the academic year continue to have access to nutritious food during the long summer months. By partnering with organizations already embedded in communities, the program aims to reach children who might otherwise go without consistent, healthy meals.

The department is particularly focused on expanding partnerships to include a wide range of sponsors capable of serving areas with unserved or underserved children. These partnerships are essential to making sure that all children in need have access to the program. “Local nonprofits, schools, camps, and faith-based organizations are well-positioned to provide meals to children who might otherwise be missed,” program officials said.

Registration for sponsors for the 2026 Summer BreakSpot Program is now officially open. Organizations interested in participating must adhere to specific deadlines to ensure smooth operations. Sponsors who plan to request an advance to cover purchases for June or July must submit a complete application by March 15, 2026, and must be approved before their program begins. Sponsors who do not require an advance must submit applications by April 15, 2026, also ensuring approval prior to the start of their program.

These deadlines are designed to give sponsors sufficient time to prepare, purchase supplies, and coordinate logistics before serving meals to children. Advance requests allow organizations to receive funding early, helping them plan more effectively and secure the resources needed to operate successfully.

The Summer BreakSpot Program not only provides meals but also helps foster a sense of community and support for children and families who face food insecurity. By participating, organizations can directly contribute to reducing hunger and promoting health and wellness during the summer months when school-provided meals are not available.

For more information on how to become a sponsor and participate in the Summer BreakSpot Program, the department encourages organizations to visit the Sponsor Training page on their website. Training sessions are available annually to help new and returning sponsors navigate the program’s requirements and ensure a smooth, compliant operation.

Through this initiative, Florida continues to prioritize child nutrition and community engagement, seeking to make a tangible difference in the lives of children across the state. With the support of dedicated organizations and volunteers, the Summer BreakSpot Program aims to prevent childhood hunger and ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals, no matter where they spend their summer.
