BCPS announces 2026 Caliber Awards finalists honoring outstanding teachers, school leaders and district employees across Broward County
Broward County, Florida – Broward County Public Schools has released the list of finalists for the 2026 Caliber Awards, marking one of the most anticipated moments of the academic year for the nation’s sixth-largest school district. The annual awards program shines a spotlight on educators and employees whose daily work quietly but powerfully shapes classrooms, campuses and entire communities across Broward County.
This year’s finalists were selected from a large and competitive pool of nominees representing schools and departments throughout the district. Together, they reflect the depth of talent within BCPS and the shared mission of providing high-quality learning experiences for every student, regardless of background or ability. The Caliber Awards honor excellence in four major categories: Teacher of the Year, Principal of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year and School or District Employee of the Year.
The winners will be announced during the Caliber Awards ceremony on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 5 p.m. The event will be held at the Broward County Convention Center and is expected to draw educators, families, district leaders and community partners from across South Florida.
“The Caliber Awards showcases the extraordinary talent, dedication and passion of our educators and staff,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “These finalists go above and beyond every day to inspire students, foster meaningful learning experiences and make a lasting impact on our school communities.”
Among the most closely watched honors each year is Teacher of the Year, and the 2026 finalists represent a wide range of grade levels, subject areas and professional backgrounds. What unites them is a clear focus on student success and a willingness to lead beyond their classrooms.
Mabel S. Colon of Orange Brook Elementary School is recognized for her work as an Exceptional Student Education Support Facilitator. With extensive experience in both teaching and leadership, Colon plays a central role in supporting students with disabilities while also mentoring new teachers and helping guide schoolwide instructional efforts. Her commitment to inclusive practices has earned praise from colleagues and families alike, who describe her as compassionate, professional and deeply invested in every child’s growth.
At James S. Rickards Middle School, science educator Fatima De Leon Casco has built a reputation for hands-on, inquiry-based instruction that pushes students to think critically and engage deeply with scientific concepts. As department head, she has helped raise science achievement across the campus, including a significant increase in the schoolwide Science Achievement Rate and consistently strong Biology End of Course results. Her work is also rooted in equity, with a focus on ensuring all students have access to high expectations and meaningful learning opportunities.
Denise L. Moore, a Literacy Coach at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, brings years of classroom experience and instructional leadership to her role. A four-time Teacher of the Year honoree, Moore has led key school improvement initiatives and founded mentoring programs that support both students and educators. Known for her innovative approach and collaborative style, she has helped strengthen English Language Arts instruction while fostering a culture of shared responsibility and continuous improvement.
At Plantation High School, Dr. Saima Sanaullah has spent more than 14 years teaching science in advanced academic and honors programs while also serving as department chair. Her data-driven leadership has contributed to substantial gains in student performance, including a notable rise in Biology End of Course proficiency. Colleagues credit her with building a positive department culture that values collaboration, reflection and instructional innovation.
Rounding out the Teacher of the Year finalists is Ilona Tinerino-Allen of Pasadena Lakes Elementary School. A first-grade teacher with more than 25 years of experience, she is known for delivering engaging, data-informed instruction that consistently produces strong academic results. Beyond her classroom, Tinerino-Allen mentors fellow educators, leads professional development and has helped create enrichment opportunities that support both academic growth and positive student behavior. Her influence extends to families and the broader school community, where she is widely respected for her dedication and professionalism.
In addition to honoring teachers, the Caliber Awards recognize outstanding leadership at the school level. The Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year categories highlight administrators who guide their schools through complex challenges while maintaining a focus on student achievement, safety and staff development. These leaders are often the steady presence behind the scenes, balancing daily operations with long-term vision and community engagement.
The School and District Employee of the Year category further underscores the idea that education is a team effort. From support staff to district professionals, these employees play essential roles in keeping schools running smoothly and ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed.
The Caliber Awards program has become a cornerstone of BCPS culture, offering a moment to pause and celebrate the people who make the district strong. While only one finalist in each category will ultimately receive the top honor, district leaders emphasize that every finalist represents excellence worthy of recognition.
As the February ceremony approaches, schools across Broward County are rallying behind their finalists, sharing stories of their impact and celebrating their accomplishments. For students, families and colleagues, the awards serve as a reminder that dedication, creativity and care continue to thrive in classrooms and offices throughout the district.
When the spotlight turns to the stage at the Broward County Convention Center, it will not only honor individual achievement, but also reflect a broader commitment to public education and the people who bring it to life every day.
