Weston residents gain new opportunities through expanded housing assistance programs for repairs and homeownership
Weston, Florida – Homeownership often comes with unexpected challenges. Roofs age, windows weaken, and heating or cooling systems eventually wear out. For many families, the cost of these repairs can be overwhelming. In the South Florida community of Weston, city officials are working to ease that burden through a set of housing assistance programs designed to help residents maintain and improve their homes.
The City of Weston has partnered with the Broward County Housing and Urban Planning Division to offer several programs aimed at income-eligible homeowners. These initiatives provide financial support for repairs, accessibility upgrades, and even help for residents who are hoping to purchase their first home.
The pre-application window for these programs has recently been extended, giving more residents time to apply. Interested homeowners now have until June 30, 2026, to submit their information for consideration. Applications are processed on a first come/first qualified basis, meaning early submissions could improve the chances of receiving assistance.
Among the most significant offerings are the Minor Home Repair Program and the Barrier Free or Special Needs Program. Both are designed to address critical home improvements that protect safety, comfort, and accessibility.
Through these programs, eligible homeowners may receive assistance for major upgrades and repairs that can otherwise be difficult to afford. Services available under the program include roof repair or full replacement of damaged roofing systems, installation of insulation to improve energy efficiency, and replacement of aging windows with impact-resistant models that are better suited to Florida’s storm-prone climate.
Exterior doors may also be replaced with impact-resistant doors, adding another layer of protection to homes. Additional services include HVAC or air-conditioning replacement or upgrades, which can significantly improve indoor comfort during Florida’s intense heat.
For some properties, the program also covers the cost of connecting to sanitary sewer systems and closing older septic tanks—an improvement that can benefit both homeowners and the surrounding environment.
One of the most appealing aspects of the assistance is the financial structure. The support is provided through interest-free loans, allowing homeowners to complete important upgrades without taking on traditional debt.
“No monthly payments are due on these interest-free loans. After residing in your home for the 10-year term, the loan is forgiven.”
For residents who are still working toward owning a home, Weston and Broward County also offer a Homebuyer Purchase Assistance Program. This initiative provides significant financial help to first-time buyers who meet the program’s eligibility requirements.
The program can provide up to $120,000 in assistance, depending on the applicant’s financial need. However, participants must first qualify for a mortgage loan that meets county guidelines.
Other requirements apply as well. Applicants must not have owned residential property during the previous three years, and the purchased home must serve as their primary residence. Buyers must also contribute at least three percent of the purchase price, though two percent of that amount may come from a gift.

Like the repair programs, the homebuyer assistance is structured as a zero-percent interest loan. As long as the homeowner continues to own, occupy, and maintain the property for fifteen years, the loan will be fully forgiven.
Local officials say recent adjustments to eligibility levels mean more households may now qualify for assistance than in previous years. With rising housing costs across many parts of Florida, programs like these are increasingly important for helping families maintain stable housing and build long-term financial security.
For Weston residents, the expanded application period offers a renewed opportunity to access support that could make home repairs, accessibility improvements, or even the dream of homeownership a reality.
