Driftwood Middle School students celebrate Earth Day early with support from the Miami HEAT and school board members

Broward County, Florida – Students at Driftwood Middle School will celebrate the spirit of environmental stewardship a little earlier this year, thanks to a special visit and generous support from the Miami Heat. The school is preparing for a day of excitement, learning, and hands-on gardening activities as part of a unique Earth Day initiative designed to strengthen its already strong environmental programs.

The celebration is scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the school’s campus located in Hollywood. The event will bring together students, teachers, administrators, members of the Broward County School Board, and special guests from the Miami HEAT organization, including former players, dancers, and the team’s energetic mascot Burnie.

Activities will begin with a lively pep rally at 1:30 p.m., setting the tone for a day centered on environmental awareness and school pride. After the rally, students will head outdoors to take part in a series of garden projects and sustainability activities designed to transform parts of the school grounds into vibrant learning spaces.

As part of the initiative, the Miami HEAT will donate a variety of resources aimed at expanding the school’s outdoor learning laboratory. Among the contributions are 100 plants that will be used to create a new butterfly garden, a feature expected to attract pollinators and help students learn about biodiversity and local ecosystems.

The project will also significantly expand the school’s vegetable garden. Fifteen new raised garden beds will be installed, giving students additional space to grow fresh produce while learning about agriculture, nutrition, and environmental responsibility. Teachers say the garden has already become a valuable teaching tool, and the additional beds will allow more classes to participate in hands-on lessons.

Beyond traditional gardening, the school will also receive eight hydroponic systems—innovative setups that allow plants to grow without soil. These systems are often used to demonstrate modern agricultural techniques and sustainable food production methods. For students interested in science and technology, the hydroponic installations provide an opportunity to explore how plants can thrive in carefully controlled environments.

Adding a creative element to the project, the campus will also feature a new nature-themed mural designed to celebrate the environment and inspire students to think about their connection to the natural world.

The enhancements come at a school that has already earned widespread recognition for its environmental efforts. Driftwood Middle School has been honored as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, a designation awarded to institutions that demonstrate excellence in sustainability and environmental education.

The school has also received the Green Flag Award from the National Wildlife Federation and earned a prestigious Florida Gold Apple Award for its innovative programs.

Another notable achievement came when Driftwood won the Miami HEAT’s “How Low Can You Go” challenge, an annual program that encourages schools to reduce energy and water consumption throughout the school year.

In addition to its environmental achievements, the school continues to gain recognition for academic programs that emphasize health and student well-being. In 2026, Driftwood Middle School was named a Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America for its Frank C. Campana Academy of Health and Wellness.

With the support of the Miami HEAT and the enthusiasm of students and educators, the Earth Day celebration at Driftwood Middle School promises to be more than just a one-day event. Instead, organizers hope it will inspire lasting environmental awareness while giving students practical opportunities to care for the planet—one plant, garden bed, and butterfly at a time.
