Florida officials seek public input through new survey for the 2028 State Hazard Mitigation Plan

Hollywood, Florida – The Florida Division of Emergency Management is asking residents and businesses across the state to share their views as officials begin updating Florida’s 2028 State Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The public survey is intended to gather information about the hazards and risks communities face, the steps already being taken to reduce those risks and possible strategies that could help protect people and property in the future.

Residents and businesses are being encouraged to take part because local experiences can help provide a clearer picture of the challenges facing different parts of Florida. Communities across the state can face different types of hazards, and the information submitted through the survey will be used as part of the planning process.

The State Hazard Mitigation Plan, commonly referred to as the SHMP, is being updated for 2028. Public feedback will help officials better understand community needs and priorities as they work on the new version of the plan.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management said the input will help ensure that the updated plan reflects the needs, priorities and perspectives of communities throughout the state.

The survey asks participants to provide information about hazards affecting their communities, existing mitigation efforts and ideas for reducing future risks. Both residents and businesses are invited to participate.

Officials are asking the public to complete the survey by October 15, 2026. The survey is described as brief, giving residents and businesses an opportunity to provide feedback without a lengthy process.

Public participation is one part of the broader effort to update the state’s hazard mitigation planning. The information collected can help identify concerns and potential approaches that may be considered as Florida prepares its updated plan.

The Division of Emergency Management is encouraging eligible participants to submit their responses before the October 15 deadline so their experiences and views can be included in the planning process.

The survey is open to Florida residents and businesses, giving people across the state an opportunity to contribute information about the risks they see in their own communities and the measures they believe could help reduce those risks in the years ahead.
