Tri-Rail continues to experience steady growth in ridership as more passengers turn to the commuter train system in 2025

South Florida – Tri-Rail is kicking off 2025 on a high note, with ridership numbers continuing to climb in the first few months of the year. According to the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), the train system has recorded a 2% increase in ridership during the first quarter compared to the same period in 2024. With an average of 385,000 monthly riders and March nearing the 400,000 mark, Tri-Rail appears to be gaining even more momentum following its full ridership recovery last year.

In 2024, Tri-Rail carried over 4.4 million passengers—just 30,000 short of its all-time high of nearly 4.5 million riders set in 2019. This upward trend, now carrying into 2025, reflects the growing appeal of commuter rail travel across the South Florida region.

“As we continue to expand and enhance our services, it’s clear that South Floridians are increasingly recognizing the value and convenience of Tri-Rail,” said David Dech, SFRTA Executive Director. “With more people relying on Tri-Rail for their daily commute and travel, we remain committed to improving service and ensuring a reliable transportation option so even more people come onboard.”

Daily weekday ridership on Tri-Rail trains has averaged around 15,000 since 2024, with some days in 2025 reaching as high as 16,000 passengers. Weekend numbers have remained solid as well, with Saturday and Sunday ridership regularly reaching 8,000 and 7,000, respectively.

Key stations continue to play a big role in this ridership surge. Airport-related travel remains a major factor, with the Miami Airport and Fort Lauderdale Airport stations ranking among the system’s busiest. The Metrorail Transfer Station, where riders connect to Miami’s local Metrorail network, holds the second spot in terms of passenger volume. Meanwhile, Tri-Rail’s presence at MiamiCentral Station in the heart of downtown Miami offers added convenience for both business and leisure travelers.

Another contributor to Tri-Rail’s growing popularity is its express train service, introduced in July 2024. Featuring a southbound morning run and a northbound evening return, the express train offers limited stops and a quicker, direct ride between MiamiCentral and West Palm Beach.

This service has quickly gained traction, drawing an average of 450 round-trip passengers daily and often surpassing 500.

“We are grateful to have a dedicated ridership base that supports Tri-Rail and lets us know what we need to do to improve our services,” added Dech. “This continued growth in ridership demonstrates people are appreciating our efforts to make this a better system.”

To support this growth and ensure a smooth experience for all riders, SFRTA is preparing to launch an educational campaign reminding passengers to purchase tickets before boarding. Riders are encouraged to buy tickets at vending machines located at each station or via the Tri-Rail mobile app, available on both iOS and Android platforms. The campaign aims to reduce fare-related incidents and ensure everyone travels with a valid ticket.

As Tri-Rail builds on its recent success, officials say they are looking toward further improvements to meet rising demand. With reliable service, new express options, and strong community support, the system continues to serve as a vital link for South Florida residents and visitors alike.
