Oakland Park celebrates the successful completion of the 2025 Local Government Academy with a diverse group of graduates eager to shape the future of their city

Oakland Park, Florida – The 2025 Local Government Academy (LGA) of Oakland Park concluded this June, celebrating a group of 20 dedicated residents who spent 10 weeks delving deep into the workings of their city. This unique program offered an in-depth, behind-the-scenes experience, giving participants the opportunity to learn firsthand about the essential services and operations that keep their city running smoothly.
Held from April 3rd to June 12th, the LGA program featured a diverse group of graduates, showcasing the true spirit of Oakland Park. With residents and business owners from a variety of backgrounds, nearly three-quarters of the participants hailed from West Oakland Park. Notably, this year’s cohort saw women participating in equal numbers to men, a significant shift from previous classes. Among the graduates were Jaia Malca, the owner of Ata Bags on Oakland Park Boulevard, and Sheree Clayton, the City’s Library Manager, both of whom contributed their unique perspectives to the program.
Over the course of the program, participants toured a range of City facilities, learning about everything from the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Fire Rescue to Parks and Leisure Services, Public Works, and other vital departments. The program also included a guided bus tour of Oakland Park’s parks, allowing participants to see the city from a different vantage point. Each Thursday evening session was rounded off with a delicious dinner from local favorites like Camille’s, Wing Loon, Pinho’s Deli, and Mason Jar Pub, creating a sense of community through both education and shared meals.
The LGA program culminated in a heartfelt graduation dinner, where new friendships were celebrated, and leadership certificates were awarded. The event marked the end of a journey that not only educated the participants about their local government but also strengthened their bond with the community. As the graduates look ahead, they carry with them a deeper understanding of their city’s operations and a renewed commitment to contributing to its future.
Oakland Park’s Local Government Academy is a powerful example of how civic engagement and education can help shape the future of a community. As the city continues to grow and evolve, the leadership and dedication of individuals like these 2025 graduates will play a crucial role in guiding its progress.
“Congratulations to the Class of 2025—you’re helping shape the future of our City!” said a representative from the City of Oakland Park, emphasizing the importance of such programs in fostering local leadership.
