Broward County to conduct aerial mosquito spraying to address high mosquito population and nuisance in several areas

Broward County, Florida – In response to a surge in mosquito-related service requests and data from ongoing surveillance, Broward County’s Public Works Mosquito Control Section has announced plans to conduct aerial spraying over parts of Southwest Ranches, Davie, Pembroke Pines, and Weston. The aerial spraying will take place between Saturday, July 12, and Monday, July 14, 2025, from 2 AM to 6 AM, weather permitting.

The targeted spraying aims to address a significant increase in mosquito populations caused by recent heavy rainfall. The mosquitoes being targeted are identified as Psorophora species, commonly known as “gallinippers.” These mosquitoes, which are native to the Everglades, are large, aggressive, and notorious for being strong fliers. While gallinippers do not transmit diseases such as Zika or dengue, their aggressive biting habits make them a major nuisance for residents in the affected areas.

The Broward County Mosquito Control Section regularly conducts treatments to control mosquito populations through a combination of methods including backpack, truck, and aerial spraying, all guided by ongoing surveillance and public service requests. The upcoming aerial adulticide spraying is a direct response to the increased number of gallinippers in the region, which have become more prevalent after the recent rains.

Residents living in the affected areas who are registered with the state’s notification system will receive alerts ahead of the spraying. Additionally, those with respiratory issues, such as asthma, are advised to stay indoors during the spraying to minimize exposure.

This aerial spraying operation is one of many efforts by the Broward Mosquito Control Section to manage and control mosquito populations throughout the county. The county encourages residents to do their part in preventing mosquito breeding by eliminating standing water around their homes. Stagnant water in containers, gutters, or other outdoor areas provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes, further exacerbating the issue.

To further assist in combating the mosquito problem, residents can call 311 or fill out a Mosquito Service Request Form to request mosquito control services. The county remains committed to maintaining the health and comfort of its residents by taking proactive steps in managing mosquito populations.

As the spraying operation takes place in the early morning hours, the community is urged to stay informed and prepared, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for everyone in the affected areas.
