Pembroke Pines, Florida – On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the City of Pembroke Pines will formally present a proclamation to mark the 90th anniversary of Social Security, an initiative that has been a cornerstone of economic security for millions of Floridians. The event, which will take place at the City Commission meeting, comes at a pivotal time for both current and future generations who rely on Social Security benefits.

The proclamation will serve as a tribute to the crucial role Social Security has played over the last nine decades, ensuring financial stability for retirees, people with disabilities, and the surviving family members of deceased workers. Since its creation in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Social Security has undergone numerous amendments, all of which have worked to adapt and enhance the program for a growing and changing population.

One of the key highlights of the 90th-anniversary celebration will be the illumination of Pembroke Pines City Hall on August 14, which will be bathed in red light to commemorate the day Social Security was signed into law. This symbolic gesture will remind the public of the ongoing importance of the program, which provides vital support to more than 5 million Floridians, with nearly 46% of the state’s older adults depending on Social Security for at least half of their income.

“Social Security has been a lifeline for millions, providing stability and peace of mind for workers, retirees, and their families,” said AARP Florida Director Jeff Johnson. “As we celebrate this milestone, it is more important than ever that we continue to protect and strengthen Social Security for future generations.”

The collaboration between the City of Pembroke Pines and AARP Florida further emphasizes the importance of the program and the need for continued advocacy to preserve it. As the nation’s largest nonprofit organization with nearly 38 million members, AARP Florida has long been a champion for Social Security reform, working to ensure that the program remains sustainable for years to come.

The 90th-anniversary event will also serve as a reminder of the lasting impact of Social Security, not only in Florida but across the country. With millions of Americans depending on the program, Social Security continues to be one of the most critical components of the social safety net.

Residents of Pembroke Pines and surrounding areas are encouraged to attend the City Commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, located at 601 City Center Way, Pembroke Pines, FL 33025. The event will highlight the program’s history and the ongoing efforts to keep it secure for future generations.

This celebration is an opportunity for the community to reflect on the tremendous value of Social Security, a program that continues to provide economic security and hope for millions of individuals and families. As we mark 90 years of Social Security, the partnership between AARP Florida and the City of Pembroke Pines offers a powerful message of solidarity and commitment to safeguarding this vital program for years to come.
